Just like any sports, singing is a practice-oriented skill that gets better with time and hard work. You need to work on your singing skills day in day out to be the best of the best singers.

Cultivate a discipline and lifestyle to really dig deep to find out if you’re cut out for it.

However, if you’re just starting off and want to dip your toe in the water then you need to build a habit rather than vigorous sessions of toil.

Luckily, if you’re just getting into singing then we’ve put together 5 tips that will help you tap into your inner rock star!

1. Warming Up And Stretch

Going back to my sports analogy, this is the most crucial aspect of singing. It helps you to get all that phlegm out of your throat and clear out your pathway for proper breathing technique. Just like any muscle in your body, your vocal chords are part of the muscle group that will perform better with warm-ups and helps you hit those difficult notes.

Do a physical stretch and sit up straight, this will help you clear out your lungs and help breath better. You might even yawn a few times after this and that is absolutely normal.

2. Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

This happens a lot with newbies and amateur singers, they are afraid to go after those high pitch notes and fast-paced songs mainly because they might sound silly. No matter the cracked voice or silly sounds you make in the beginning you need to push through and persevere, only then you can finally achieve those high notes.

That brings us over to the power and range of your voice. Don’t always pick soft and slow songs, pick something that you’re not sure you could sing. This way you will understand what your boundaries are and then push past them during the practice.

3. Manage Your Breathing

Now we’re getting into technical, breathing and singing are like two sides of a coin. You cannot have both at the same time. If you don’t master this fundamental at the beginning then you will be limping along for a long time. Breathing helps you with you things

  • Plan ahead to hit those notes, so you can breathe in small breaths or big ones.
  • Avoid those awkward pauses because you ran out of breath.

4. Practice And Lifestyle

Practice, Practice and Practice…its part of the game. The more you practice better you get, it’s as simple as that! but doing this every day is boring and on the long-term – one tends to lose the focus and stop singing all together. To avoid fatigue and make singing more fun, you can develop a lifestyle habit that will help you keep singing no matter the day of the week. Like for example, you can practice singing daily on your commute to work in your car or sing for 10 minutes in your shower. It’s as simple as that and avoids being a chore.

5. Have Fun

A lot of times when you’re learning a new skill, people get caught up in perfection that they forget to have fun. Go out with your friends to Karaoke, go attend a concert and singing along to your favorite band, jam out in your car and don’t worry about the notes!
