Why you need Earplugs for Concerts And Music Festivals

It’s been a well-known fact that the regularity with which most of us attend concerts and festivals in today’s day and age is harming our hearing in more ways then we imagine.

Most times however the case still sadly remains that most people realize when the irreversible damage is done and by then it’s too late to prevent.

It’s been put best by Carolynn Travis, a hearing protection specialist at EarLove, as well as a DJ and former raver, who suffers from profound hearing loss herself. She told EDM.com, “going to a loud show without hearing protection is like giving your ears a concussion.”

The ringing you experience in your ears after a concert is similar to a concussion in that sense. And just like the long term effects that a concussion has on your body, this kind of exposure to loud sounds for long periods of time affects your hearing little by little leading to permanent damage.

Some of the biggest names in music today have learned the importance of protecting their ears, one of their most valuable assets as producers and DJ’s, the hard way. From Zedd to Steve Angello and Laidback Luke, they’ve all suffered from some kind of hearing loss/issues over time.

Music festivals and live concerts have definitely been spiking interests among the masses and it’s only on the rise. While this means more people are enjoying live music over the course of a day or a weekend, it also means more people are making themselves more vulnerable to noise-induced hearing loss. Hearing loss has become a rising health issue in recent years due to a number of reasons. One of the primary ones being exposure to loud sounds day long at concerts and festivals but also taking into consideration what volume we use our personal devices at. The World Health Organization reports that 360 million people globally have disabling hearing loss.

As reported by Mother Nature Network, The decibel level of a normal conversation is roughly 40 to 60 decibels. A live concert, however, is 110 to 120 decibels. The decibel level of a concert can reach as high as 140 if you’re standing right in front of the speakers. While it has been found an average user listens to music in their headphones at between 75-105 decibels.

In a study done by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), they found male attendees of music festivals who did not use earplugs and simultaneously used alcohol and/or drugs were more likely to develop temporary noise-induced hearing loss. It has also been found, certain individuals are more susceptible than others. Like if someone who already has a little bit of hearing loss and is slightly older, they are more likely to suffer irreversible hearing loss as compared to a younger individual who is more tolerant to loud noise due to plasticity in their hearing systems.

There are a plethora of options out there when it comes to finding the best earplugs for you. From custom made earplugs that run into 100’s of dollars to foam earplugs which can be found as easily as at a drugstore and are extremely affordable. However, a certain unique pair called Loop Earplugs caught our attention at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 and you can check it out here.

If you attend shows with the frequency we do, we’d highly recommend investing in a pair of earplugs and using them religiously. It is also important to get your hearing tested before its too late in order to be able to arrest the issue before it escalates.
