Florian Picasso interview

We all know Pablo’s paintings but have you heard Florian’s music?

By his standards, 2018 was a quiet year for Florian although he did return to close out 2018 on Protocol Recordings with a massive release in the form of his new track “Hikari.”

Check out our chat with Florian where we talked about this single, reasons for the “quiet year” and plenty more.

T.H.E – Hey Florian! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. 2018 has been a very quiet year for you on the production front, by your standards. What caused this? Were you struggling with inspiration, or did you want to develop a new sound?

Florian Picasso – So basically, my team and I moved to Los Angeles to work on some other projects that involve songwriters and musicians, more pop-oriented. I loved the process of it, to be sharing ideas in a room and jamming with longtime friends and partners. I thought it was a good time for me to do since the passing of my grandma was hard to take in, I wanted to be somewhere else than behind the decks with my hands up and faking to be happy.

T.H.E – How productive was this period, that you spent in the studio working on your sound without releasing tracks?

Florian Picasso – The outcome was fantastic, and I was really able to nail a few tracks from that new side of me and also still play around with the EDM stuff.

I’m just very happy and excited to show what has been made there! It’s just something I have never done or shown to anyone from my audience yet.

T.H.E – You just released a new track on Nicky Romero’s Protocol Recordings – Hikari. How long was it in the works?

Florian Picasso – This one was made a while ago, maybe like 2-3 years ago but going back and forth on the production and actually premiered at Tomorrowland 2017, the Protocol team then helped me finish it and made a few adjustments.

T.H.E – Quite a few of your songs have Japanese names as titles. How important has the Japanese culture, and your Asian roots been in helping you become an artist?

Florian Picasso – Japanese culture is just fascinating, I have developed a passion for Japan since I was a kid, I’m very much into Japanese gastronomy history and anime. I guess with the tracks I have made you can hear those sounds and melodies that are a blend of Asia’s culture. When you listen to Hikari, it is so rich in feelings.

T.H.E – ‘Hikari’ also happens to be your third track in a month, which signifies a strong end to 2018. Was it always the plan to end the year on a high?

Florian Picasso – I wanted to come back with a new single more pop-oriented but since it’s another way of working it takes more time to settle that with the team, labels, and people involved in the tracks.

Therefore, I just couldn’t wait and make people wait for new contents, so we just switched the plan around and went hard on the releases.

T.H.E – Having ended 2018 on such a strong note, what are your plans for 2019?

Florian Picasso – 2019 is new music, new shows, same me :)
