Definitively British in flavour, GIANT is ready to challenge the status quo in modern day hip-hop and continue to power forwards.
With a grimy tenement video shot by David Levine, their new single, “Catalyst” pushes the importance and relevance of the ‘dirty fingernails’ flavour in UK rap, as society continues to disintegrate alongside what it means to be British.
We caught up with GIANT, and spoke to them about the guys came together, and loads more. Read our chat below!
T.H.E – Hey guys! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. What have you been up to?
GIANT – We’ve been preparing for gigs, and looking forward to whatever happens next.
T.H.E – How did “GIANT” come about?
GIANT – Archive meeting Jimmy (24Vision) at our local pub and discussing hip hop and decided we wanted to start a project.
T.H.E – How best would you describe your sounds and what have been your inspirations so far?
GIANT – We’d say progressive British hip hop, but we’re trying to approach things differently. Lyrically cinematic, painting pictures with words and sounds.
T.H.E – Tell us a bit about how you guys go about merging Archive’s electronic background, and 24Vision’s rapping background. Is it a struggle at times?
GIANT – Not a struggle at all! A match made in heaven. None of us are afraid to try anything new.
T.H.E – Love your new single, “Catalyst”. We are told it’s based loosely on 24Vision’s life story. How did this idea develop, and how long was it in the works?
GIANT – We had a tune with Dave Pen (from Archive) that was incomplete and we were struggling to make it work, but once 24Vision heard it he wanted to try and use his skills to encapsulate the rush of the tempo in a way that reflected his own character.
T.H.E – What is the message that you want to give this?
GIANT – We don’t want to give too much away… what do you think? Whatever people take from it is good.
T.H.E – This one, in particular, has a very strong theme to it – dismantling of the society. Do we see you have a strong, and society led message to every song?
GIANT – Yes. It’s very important for us to be observational. 24Vision writes about what he sees: filthy stories about rose-tinted cities.
T.H.E – Lastly, what can you tell us about your plans for 2019?
GIANT – To take GiANT to another place.
