nathassia interview

Bringing together multicultural sounds and influences, Nathassia’s talents have projected her as an artist to keep an eye on the past few years. She has received support from industry icons such as Blasterjaxx, Andi Durrant & BL3ND and is known for her hypnotising live performances.

With big plans in the pipeline for 2021, we sat down with Nathassia for a chat about her musical career journey.

T.H.E – Tell us about the time you first discovered your passion for music?

NATHASSIA – I come from an Indian/Surinam family in which making and enjoying music was prominent and important in life. I was only 6 months old when my mum took me to a wedding party where there were a Soca band and people dancing to the music into the morning. My uncle hoped that I would get acquainted with the music early on and he was right because I didn’t cry once (or so I was told!) and I really can’t remember a day without music in my life ever since.

T.H.E – When did you fall in love with electronic music?

NATHASSIA – This was during my secondary school years when I was a regular at club InCasa in Leiden, The Netherlands. My group of friends were too young to be allowed in, but it helped that I was tall for my age!

T.H.E – Who are your musical influences?

NATHASSIA – It really is a melting pot of genres but to name a few I really loved listening to India Arie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anoushka Shankar, Armin van Buuren, Nitin Sawhney, Gloria Estefan, DJ Chuckie, Candy Dulfer, Bløf…

T.H.E – How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?

NATHASSIA – Industry press describes it as electronica – fused with elegantly crafted world music and an uplifting pop sensibility, and I agree.

T.H.E – Which track of yours best describes you as an artist?

NATHASSIA – I personally really like “Goddess” because of the diversity in the music, it’s electronic, a bit east & west, a bit rock and the lyrics are special to me. Also, my AKA Goddess Is A DJ was born from it!

T.H.E – What has been your biggest career achievement so far?

NATHASSIA – Performing live at the Temple of the Valley of the Kings, Luxor (Egypt). I was invited by the Nefertiti Festival and it was incredibly special as it was the first time in history that live music was allowed at this sacred place. I also got to meet many of my lovely Egyptian fans some of whom had travelled over 600 km just to see me perform. To top it all I also got to meet the princess of Egypt! A close second was being playlisted on MTV Dance for 3 months last year.

T.H.E – What is your ultimate career goal?

NATHASSIA – To perform at the Super Bowl!!!!

T.H.E – Do you have any hobbies aside from music?

NATHASSIA – Yes, but one way or another they always seem to end up being in my live shows, for example, designing and making my stage outfits, hula hooping, Indian performing arts, acting, and my little fetish for rhinestones!

T.H.E – Which artist would be your dream collaboration?

NATHASSIA – David Guetta

T.H.E – Finally, what can we expect to hear from you in 2021?

NATHASSIA – I am working on my new artist album which is out later this year. I am also working on several new Goddess Is A DJ production as a follow up to my debut remix.

Now that I am partnered up with the Maestro Livestream platform (who facilitate livestream events for Coachella, Deadmau5, The Grammy Awards) I will be continuing both my monthly live stream shows that were created during the lockdown.

The Nathassia Devine Show is live from my house every second Saturday of the month at www.nathassia.live and Goddess Is A DJ is live every last Saturday of the month at www.goddessisadj.tv.
