Its official, Ultra Music Festival is moving back to their Bayfront Park home for its 2020 edition!
After innumerable discussion and back-and-forth discussions on the matter, the City of Miami has decided to let the Miami native music festival return back to its longtime home. In what was reported to have been an at times an explosive debate, the Miami City Commission voted 3-2 to offer a revokable license agreement to allow Ultra to return.
This past year, Ultra was held in Virginia Key during its 2019 edition after the City of Miami terminated its contract which ended up leading to a lot of issues. The event had its fair share of issues, like any festival of its magnitude would have at a venue which is not exactly easily accessible. Ultra realized this and announced they were looking at moving the festival to another venue outside Miami since the experience their guests had in 2019 was not acceptable.
Whether this was a powerplay move or a wake-up call for the City of Miami, it worked in their favor when the City approached the festival to reconsider moving out of their 20 year home. After months of back-and-forth and a number of revised proposals, the City officially agreed upon Ultra’s return to Bayfront Park.
The agreement did, however, come with a number of changes the festival will need to make. As reported by Miami New Times, some of the main changes will include changes such as modifying the sound level from 110 decibels to 102, limiting the capacity of attendees to 55,000 a day, eliminating one stage and moving the direction of another, ending the event at midnight each night, and leaving the children’s park and dog park open throughout the majority of Bayfront Park’s closure.
Another major matter in contention was some past dues, Ultra will also have to pay back a negotiated sum of $308,000 owed to the city in police and fire expenses instead of the earlier quoted $475,000. This amount will be in addition to the hefty $2 million fees Ultra will pay to host the music festival in Bayfront Park.
While the festivals return was met with its fair share of pushback from certain commisioners as well as residents of Downtown Miami, the support for the festivals move back was overpowering. Support points included the number of jobs the festival generates but also the massive boost it gives the cities economy.
Ultra was first held in 1999 as a single day event at Collins Park in Miami. After its initial couple of years, most of the festivals editions have been solely hosted at Bayfront Park until 2019 when they were forced to relocate.
