Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group have collectively launched an attack against one particular YouTube ripping website with the aim of fighting piracy.
The music labels along with a slew of others have now banded together in a lawsuit against the popular YouTube ripping site youtube-mp3.org. The website, that allegedly accounts for 40% of all the world’s illegal stream rips is being sued for damages in the form of $150,000 for each alleged instance of piracy.
Here’s a short brief of what the website is all about:
‘YouTube-mp3.org is the easiest online service for converting videos to mp3. You do not need an account, the only thing you need is a YouTube URL. We will start to convert the audiotrack of your videofile to mp3 as soon as you have submitted it and you will be able to download it. Different from other services the whole conversion process will be perfomed by our infrastructure and you only have to download the audio file from our servers. Because of this our software is platform-independent: You can use it with your Mac, a Linux PC or even an iPhone. All our conversions will be perfomed in high quality mode with a bitrate of at least 128 kBit/s. Do not worry, our service is completely free. We need approximately 3 to 4 minutes per video.’
A recent survey conducted found that “57 million persons in the United States are engaging in copyright infringement of sound recordings using unauthorized online services, including stream ripping services.”
And thats just the US. So multiply a $150k into 57 million (and probably a 100-300 million more for pirates outside the US) and you’ve got a figure so absurdly large that nobody’s gonna pay, let alone a youtube ripping website. That’s what you get when the big guys try flexing their muscles. Either way, no matter what happens with the case here’s a warning for you all; Ripping streams from services like YouTube and SoundCloud is an easy alternative to straight downloading songs, but that still doesn’t make it legal.
