Rob Swire recently completely lost hearing in one of his ears and it came as a big shock to fans and the artist himself.
I have randomly become completely deaf in the left ear. Super lame. Gonna go see a doctor :/

Now that he’s back, and his hearing thankfully restored, the Knife Party man decided to shed some light on his experience and the cause – E-Cigarettes!
Hearing restored, finally. PSA: if you enjoy being able to hear, e-cigs / vaping is a really fucking bad idea

Apparently, the chemical propylene glycol, which is used as a solvent in some juices, is ototoxic – meaning toxic to the cochlea or auditory nerve. This has been a known effect since at least 1980 when applied directly to the ear (e.g., via ear drops), but its use in inhalants hasn’t been documented as of yet. It might be more wise to switch to a more vegetable glycerin based juice than PG in the future.
Propylene glycol (the ingredient in most e-cigs / "e-juice") is ototoxic – i.e. toxic to the cochlea or auditory nerve.

It's banned from use in ear drops for that exact reason, because it can cause reversible / permanent damage, depending on exposure
— Rob Swire (@rob_swire) July 6, 2015
The only reason there's not more info out there about PG when inhaled is that the research hasn't been done / e-cigs are relatively new

But take it from someone who has just lost all hearing in his left ear for the past 4 days: fuck propylene glycol and everyone that sells it
— Rob Swire (@rob_swire) July 6, 2015
Not saying anyone needs to panic, just…if you need your ears to work / earn money, tread carefully :) Wouldn't wish that shit on anyone

Research has not been done on the effects of smoking/inhaling propylene glycol and until these effects are studied in a controlled environment, there can be no way to analyze the true effects of PG vs VG or vaping in general. And of course, Swire is all ready to fund the research if need be.
How's this: if any decent university audiology dept. is interested in studying links between e-cigs/vapes and propylene-glycol-induced…

Well, that’s that! No permanent damage, but ‘vapers’ beware!
Hooray, all sorts of vape advocate douches messaging me.
