The late nineties saw the rise of some immensely talented artists. Some of them failed to live up to the expectations that people had from them, while some went to see success that one can only imagine. One of those superstars is our Artist Of The Month for June 2014. Hailing from Breda, Netherlands, this superstar’s tunes are played everywhere right from Miami to Ibiza, from London to Melbourne. Yes our artist of the month for June 2014 is Mr.Club Life, Tijs “Tiësto” Michiel Verwest.

Practising his trade over the weekends at a club in his hometown, Tiësto was soon at ease behind the decks. The early nineties saw Tiësto switch labels at a rapid pace, before forming Black Hole Recordings together with Bink. His first track to get major commercial recognition was his remix of Delerium’s “Silence”.

2001 saw the release of Tiësto’s first solo album ‘In My Memory’, which featured some tracks like ‘Flight 643’ and ‘Lethal Industry’ which are now Tiësto classics.

The album took Tiësto’s popularity to a whole new level, and he took over from Paul can Dyk as the world’s number 1 DJ for three straight years, on DJ Mag’s annual poll.

He released his second album ‘Just Be’ at the summer Olympics in Athens in 2004, where he was the first ever DJ to perform. Two more massive tracks of his ‘Just Be’ and ‘Traffic’ were featured on the album.

“Traffic” became the first instrumental track in 23 years to reach number one in Netherlands. The album also had his remake of the classic track ‘Adagio for Strings’ which remains one of Tiësto’s most memorable works. He even got his own wax statue at Madame Tussauds in Amsterdam behind a turntable.

He released his next album Elements of Life in 2007, which featured popular tracks like ‘Break My Fall’ and ‘In The Dark’.

By now Tiësto had dropped DJ from his stage name and had shifted his sounds from Trance to more Progressive House, a move that didn’t go down well with a lot of his fans.

He was also releasing his “In Search of Sunrise” mixes, which saw six editions released till 2007,and another final edition would follow in 2009. He also started his own radio show Tiësto’s Club Life on Radio 538.

He released Kaleidoscope in 2009, which featured his collaborations with JES and Nelly Furtado and also a track called ‘Century’, he worked on with Calvin Harris.

He had started producing tracks under the alias Allure too, and released an album ‘Kiss From The Past’ as Allure, in 2011.

“Kiss From The Past” also had its own remix album released. Tiësto also introduced a new mix comp series called Club Life. Volume one was the Las Vegas edition, and featured the latest progressive and electro house tracks, including Tiesto’s very own singles, “Don’t Ditch” with Marcel Woods, and “Zero 76” with the current world #1 DJ, Hardwell. He also released ‘Maximal Crazy’, one of his most popular singles to this day, and a collaboration with Diplo and Busta Rhymes called ‘C’Mon’.

In 2012 Tiësto released three more club hits – “We Own The Night”, “Chasing Summers”, and “Hell Yeah” featuring Showtek. He also released the second edition of Club Life, based in Miami.

A new interactive video series called “In The Booth” was also launched, on YouTube.

In 2013 Tiësto announced that he was working on Club Life Volume 3: Stockholm. He became a resident DJ at Hakkassan and Wet Republic in Las Vegas. He released ‘Move To The Rythm’ with Nari and Milani and The Delayers and “Take Me” featuring Kyler England. He also announced that a sixth studio album was in the works. He also had a full blown Twitter fight with Deadmau5, with Deadmau5 making fun of Tiësto’s expensive gig fees and earnings.

2014 saw him releasing the first track from his new album ‘A Town Called Paradise’. The track was called ‘Red Lights’, and went on to become a hit, even getting remix treatment from his proteges Twoloud.

Tiësto’s sixth album ‘A Town Called Paradise’ releases on 19th June, and includes collaborations with Hardwell, Firebeatz, Sultan + Ned Shepard and more. Here’s to a lot more music from Tiësto.
