Right in time for the summer, DJ/Producer – Dress Code returns with a new single, “Ride Tonight”.
We spoke to Dress Code more about how this single came about, and what we can expect this year.
T.H.E – Hey man! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. How did you first get into producing music?
Dress Code – I started out from playing instruments. I learned drums first, then went to guitar and bass, and later into keyboards and electronics. It was fun to play, but I wanted to write songs and produce my own tracks, so I got some home recording gear and started experimenting with it and trying different ideas.
T.H.E – What made you interested in dance music? What is it about EDM that made you want to produce electronic music?
Dress Code – I got into dance/electronic music because there’s a lot of variety in it (different styles and sub-genres) and it was something I listened to, but hadn’t tried to play before and it was new and exciting to get into.
T.H.E – As a producer, which artists have inspired you so far in your career?
Dress Code – Prince, Kraftwerk, The Prodigy, Daft Punk, Skrillex (to name a few)
T.H.E – Tell us about your new single, “Ride Tonight”. How did it come about?
Dress Code – It came from the idea of having time to yourself and doing something different than what would be an everyday routine.
T.H.E – The track has elements of both, EDM and rock. That’s quite interesting, does rock music also rank high on your listening taste?
Dress Code – Yes! I learned to play instruments from listening to rock and also funk music.
T.H.E – What does a typical production process look like for you? Which part of the track do you start with first?
Dress Code – I start with the lyrics. I get an idea for the chorus and the phrasing for it, then on to the verses. The musical part is some sort of instrumental hook, either a catchy sample, bassline, or a guitar riff and build everything else around that. I get whatever electronic parts I want done on a computer, and then add live instruments to it.
T.H.E – What can you tell us about your plans for 2019? Any shows or new singles coming up?
Dress Code – Getting some new song ideas together for now.
