Wiwek interview

‘Jungle Terror’ DJ – Wiwek, released his ‘Cycles’ album on his imprint – Maha Vana.

The album is centered around the concept of life cycles and the environment and has a really creative and intriguing story behind it. We caught up with him, to understand how this album came into being, and also happened to speak about why he doesn’t watch Game Of Thrones.

T.H.E – Hey Wiwek! Welcome to the T.H.E – Music Essentials. 2019 has already begun on a promising note, with the release of your ‘Cycles’ album. How long was it in the works?

Wiwek – Hello! Some songs started in 2016/1017 but I would say overall, I worked on it for one and a half year.

T.H.E – What does ‘Cycles’ represent, and what were the toughest challenges you faced while creating it?

Wiwek – ‘Cycles’ represents that everything we face is a cycle, nothing lasts, everything comes and goes, whether it’s good or bad, happy or sad, even the universe is a constant cycle of destroying and building. In terms of music, sometimes I feel like making banging club music and sometimes just some cool melodies. This album is 50/50 DJ Club music and more crossover melodic music. A small cycle itself in my inspiration flow.

The toughest challenge was probably letting it go and release it.

T.H.E – Were there any artists that inspired you during the creation of ‘Cycles’?

Wiwek – Not specific, especially cause it’s not ‘one sound’. For every track and mood, I had a different inspiration, whether its an artist or life situation.

T.H.E – You are also known as the pioneer of the ‘Jungle Terror’ genre. Would be right in saying that the album represents sounds beyond this genre? How have fans reacted to it?

Wiwek – I would say it’s an evolvement if you would consider ‘jungle terror’ as the Wiwek sound. I feel like I am evolving and so grows the genre with me I guess.

Fans are reacting very positive and I am glad they are enjoying it. I did not really think about how people would react, if I did I would probably not stepped out of my comfort zone this much. Really feels like a bonus that most of my current fans are still appreciating the new sounds.

T.H.E – Talk us through a bit about your vision for your label – Maha Vana. What does it mean, what kind of sounds does it stand for, and where do you see it in the next year?

Wiwek – Maha Vana is Sanskrit for a big forest. The forest really feels like nature’s playground to me, there is so much creativity and diversity and everything flows how it’s supposed to be. That’s my ideal situation for a music label. I want it to be my playground and a musical playground for like-minded artists. I will still release on other labels as well probably but for the album, it felt like the best home to just release it independently. Next year I hope to release music from other artists as well, so I can help them a bit being creative and hopefully successful.

T.H.E – What does the rest of 2019 look like for you?

Wiwek – Hopefully making a lot of music. Making this album gave me so much inspiration and really reopened my creative floodgates.

T.H.E – If it weren’t for being a music producer or a DJ, what would you be?

Wiwek – An aspiring producer and DJ.

T.H.E – Are you a fan of Game Of Thrones? If yes, which house do you relate to the most and what do you think will happen in season 8?

Wiwek – I refuse to watch Game Of Thrones because I know I would get addicted to it and would probably not have had the time to make this album.
