Our Artist Of The Month for July 2016 is the duo that specializes in a niche sound, a modern version of Hip House, and you’ve probably heard their sound system splitting super hit ‘Who’ with Tujamo. Yes it’s none other than Plastik Funk.
Comprising of two DJs Rafael Ximenez and Mikio Gruschinske, who’ve each worked their way to the top by DJing for over two decades, the duo met in 2002 at a club in Cologne, Germany where Gruschinske was a resident and Ximenez
was booked as a guest. Shortly thereafter they realized their musical tastes and styles fit together and a brotherhood was born. They’ve since worked on a number of tracks including the super hit ‘Who’ with Tujamo, ‘Dr.Who’, ‘Here We Go’, ‘What Love Can Do’, ‘Let Me See Ya’, ‘All For You’ and ‘No Never’.
Plastik Funk’s touring schedule has seen them play all around the world, including places like Brazil and Korea, and at some of the most prestigious festivals in the world like Tomorrowland.
Summer 2014 was a record breaking season playing for Tomorrowland, Pacha NYC, Castle Chicago, a full Asia Tour and landing a residency at NeonSplash at Privilege in Ibiza. All apexed with a personal invite from global superstar, Avicii to play at the world famous Ushuaia in Ibiza as part of his Sunday night residency.
The duo also has a monthly radio show ‘Funk You Very Much’. Their latest release ‘Don’t Push Me’ has received great feedback and has been played on Fusion Radio, BBC Radio 1 and Club Planet to name a few.
Rafael was born in Madrid and lived there before moving to Germany, while Mikio lived and Jed in Tokyo before settling in Berlin. They began DJing hip-hop at high school but after hearing the works of Frankie Knuckles and David Morales, switched to house.
The duo released their debut EP, ‘Do It Right’ in 2003, and coupled with a few other club hits, earned them gigs all round their new adopted home country Germany. The remixes done by the duo include tracks by Deadmau5, David Guetta and Shaggy.
Another track that got them a lot of attention was their remake of ‘Everybody Dance Now’ in 2011, which led to them getting the assignment to compile Ministry of Sound’s 2009 German Sessions. Post the release of their global hit ‘Who’ in 2012, they started getting gigs in various countries and shifted base to Spain. They also remixed Who into ‘Dr.Who’ in 2014, and the track made it to the UK Top 25.
We wish the duo all the best and hope that they keep Funking! 😉
