German production and DJ duo Paul Drynda and Daniel Bolinger are making a stand in 2015. Having racked up support for their exotic blend of Deep/Nu Disco/Indie Dance inspired House from the ranks of Pete Tong, Nhan Solo, Purple Disco Machine, Oliver Schories, and Tapesh amongst many others – they’re a fast-moving, highly creative and driven team that are relishing in the forward thinking pockets of House music as it evolves into new and innovative forms.

With Beatport Top 10s in the bag and a steady batch of outputs via the likes of Mother Recordings, Kittball Records, Milk & Sugar Recordings, King Street Sounds and Emma Music – it’s looking like a solid year ahead for this inspired production team.

Matt Caldwell PR sat down with Dry & Bolinger this week to talk about what they’ve got on the cards for the months ahead and to find out a little more about the duo and their ways.

Matt Caldwell PR – Welcome guys and thanks for taking the time to talk to us. First off, give us a little insight of who you are and what you do.

Thank you for having us! We are Dry & Bolinger and we´re two guys from the middle of Germany who are trying to put all our positive experiences into our productions! Without being limited to any one genre or sub-genre is of great importance to us because when we start creating a new track, it is always the feeling, not anything in particular that leads us where we go!

Matt Caldwell PR – What was it that first really caught your attention about electronic music?

Bolinger: I have two wonderful elder sisters; they’ve always listened to House music and the Soulbeat sampler vinyls in the middle 80s and I pretty much adored it right away! There is one song I still love from back then: D- Train – You´re The One For Me!

Dry: When I was a little boy in the early 90s, I watched a documentary about Techno on music television. I don’t remember that much of it but I remember I was really impressed by that beat that was repeated again and again. I honestly don’t know how a simple loop can catch you and keep you groovin’ for so long, but it does, and I loved it from the very first moment.

Matt Caldwell PR – Who were your early influences and the key people who you looked up to musically?

Bolinger: My sisters, of course and artists like i.e. Breakwater, Full Intention, Emanuel Top, Tonka, EPMD, De La Soul…back in the day there was no Youtube, so I watched videotapes like “1 on 1 DJ Battle” with DJ Hype – he inspired me to work on my DJ skills.

Dry: I had a good friend who was 13 years older than me and he was DJing at a lot of private parties. When I was 9 years old, he asked me to help him out. So I got the chance to “mix” with a Hifi-CD-Player, a Discman and a very simple 4-channel mixer. From this time on I always looked up to him for what he was doing. I think you don’t need a big name to look up to someone. When I started listening to House music it was Daft Punk, DJ Falcon, Cassius, Dirty Vegas, Stardust and Funky Green Dogs.

Matt Caldwell PR – We know you both had individual careers before joining up, what led you to put aside your solo projects and start working together?

We met in a small club where we played one after another. We liked each other’s sound and so we started talking and a few days later we sat in the studio! From the first time we worked in the studio together, we knew this could become a great collaboration. Working together is so much fun and our sound got better with every studio session. We are still working alone but we focus on our project “Dry & Bolinger”. We’re going to do everything possible to enhance our work furthermore.

Matt Caldwell PR – How did your first projects originally sound style-wise and how have they changed over time?

Dry & Bolinger – We had several projects; solo and together and we went through some different styles like Tech House, Progressive stuff, some Discoish, cheesy sounds and we did a few funny bootlegs too.

Matt Caldwell PR – What’s your work flow like in the studio, in terms also of finding the balance of who does what?

Dry: Usually everything starts with a loop. Daniel has a huge sample library which he collected throughout the years. Sometimes he finds a funky bass-line and starts to build a groove around this sound. On the other hand, i work a lot with Maschine. Being a drummer for round about 11 years made me fall in love with the possibility to mess around with drum patterns. I usually start with the drum / percussion groove and add more sounds afterwards.

Bolinger: We both have a small studio so everyone can work on an idea separately. Sometimes we send short video snippets via mobile phone to ask for each other’s opinion. In the end we normally meet in Daniel’s studio and put everything together.
We have a good output at the moment but we always want to improve our workflow. Working with different DAWs can kill the flow so we are going to change that soon. We are very curious about how we’re going to work in the future.

Matt Caldwell PR – What are your bare essentials in the studio, in terms of sounds, equipment, plug-ins etc?

Dry & Bolinger: Right now we are working with Cubase/Logic and software synthesizers. We started working with Maschine and NI Komplete a few months ago. We like the enhanced workflow very much. Unbelievable what’s possible with today’s technology. After working together with other musicians we´re trying to get more and more into hardware synthesizers to develop our production flow.

Matt Caldwell PR – Obviously working closely together also means building a strong relationship together. How would you describe your relationship both behind the decks and off-stage?

Dry & Bolinger: Actually it’s a really professional and cold relationship… Haha, just kidding. In the past years we became really good friends. You can’t do a good job together if you can’t count on each other. In our business life we are working hand in hand. It’s great to work in a team because one of us always remembers what the other one might forget. Off Business we really enjoy our time together. We laugh a lot, seriously – A LOT. Both of us have an outstanding positive vibe. Staying positive makes life so much easier. Think about it!

Matt Caldwell PR – The past two years have been very busy for you, which instances would you say were the peak moments in your career so far?

Dry & Bolinger: We think we can’t pick a peak moment by now. Well, a great gig in Serbia and a really good time at Off Sonar in Barcelona last year influenced our work in a positive way. Releasing on great Labels such as Mother, Kittball or King Street; working on remixes for big names such as CeCe Rogers; receiving a lot of love throughout the music business; being supported by Pete Tong or Bob Sinclar. Let’s say there are plenty moments that made us love what we do even more.

Matt Caldwell PR – We know that you have quite a lot of new material coming out soon, can you give us a overview of what’s lined up?

Dry & Bolinger: Our remix for “Mauro Mondello ft. CeCeRogers & Afrob – Fell In Love” has just been released, as well as our track “Say You Care” on the Mother Recordings which is out now. At the end of March our “Tell Her” EP on Milk & Sugar Recordings is going to be released. We did a remix for Ben Delay, which will be out in mid-April. There are six more Tracks that are finished but we can’t tell you any more about them at the moment!

Matt Caldwell PR – Where would you like to see Dry & Bolinger in 2015 and the years to follow?

Dry & Bolinger: Well, we guess it’s not that easy. We’d love to release on some more of our favourite labels; work together with great people; travel around the world and make a lot of people smile by doing what we love to do – music! Sky is the limit!

Matt Caldwell PR – Last question – anything to add or shout outs?

We would like to thank all our supporters, friends and family who made so many things possible and we are forced to put a shout out to Kosta from Serbia, otherwise he would kill us with the cevapcici of death! To be honest, he is a great guy and keeps supporting us from day one, only hugs and wet kisses for him ;-)

Matt Caldwell PR – Thanks guys!
