Review: John Dopping – Words In Colour

0

John Dopping recently released his debut album ‘Words in Colour’. The 13 track album has various different styles, and here’s our track-by-track take on the album.

“Fire Behind” is very very unique. In a music industry where repetition is so common nowadays, such a different and fresh track is what is required every once in a while. Really well produced track this.

“Chayote” has a good uplifting drop that makes the track groovy and is one of the only out and out dance tracks on the album. It’s a track that you’ll get addicted to on repeat listening.

“An Opportunity” is one of the best tracks on the album, and is one of the most complete tracks as well. It’s got a great piano melody in the beginning and a wonderful drum induced breakdown that picks up beautifully, giving the track just the right push to get it back on high tempo.

John keeps it simple and effective with “Basically”, and it works just fine. It isn’t one of the standout efforts on the album, and there was probably much more that could have been done to take the track one step further.

“Say Hello To Dave” is the track that makes listening to the album worthwhile. It has an addictively catchy melodic start, rolling into a piano breakdown that is absolute quality. The drop is also very well done, and you can feel the effort that must have gone into making this track what it is. Incredible is probably the word that best describes it.

“Where Do I Begin” starts off somewhat similar to ‘Say Hello..’ but ends up as a more trancey and melodic track. It has one of the most intense breakdowns of the album as well.

“Kayafly” is a blissful chill tune, that is near perfect. On hearing this track, it’s almost impossible to not notice that the track could have been even better with some vocals. That’s probably the only aspect where the track could have been even better, but its bloody good as it is.

“Aryl” is a track with an intense melody and a good progression, and ends up as another decent effort. Once again, not a standout effort though, and lacks in quality when compared to the better tracks on the album.

“Glade” is an extremely interesting tune, and is almost like two tracks rolled into one. It starts off as one track and becomes something else entirely after the breakdown. This is an exemplary production and more tracks like this one are needed. Very crafty and skilled production!

“Dissociate” sounds so good right from the word go. There is not much scope for criticism here and there are a lot of things done right, be it the bass or the tempo and progression. Such a good track.

“Malady” is an easy listening track that is part trance-rock. One of the most relaxed tunes on the album and perfect to listen to on a Sunday afternoon.

“Words Of Colour” is the complete track that has everything one could wish for in a track. The breakdown, progression and melody are all spot on, and John has hit the bulls-eye with this one.
