Review: Who’s Afraid of 138?! (Mixed by Simon Patterson & Photographer)

Simon Patterson and Photographer have cued up an exciting mix compilation titled the same as Armin van Buuren’s latest brand of trance ‘Who’s Afraid of 138’ released on Armada. What started as a track on ‘Intense’ became a stage at ASOT 650, then a record label, and eventually now comes a mix featuring some of the best recent trance tracks.

Disc one features the very edgy Vertical Mode remix of ‘Vice Versa’, which is one of the most complete tracks you’ll hear. Second Sine’s beautiful remix of ‘Witch Hunt’ is also featured on the mix along with a couple of groovy Will Atkinson tracks ‘Victims’ and ‘Atkinsane’. Simon’s own track ‘Dissolve’ is also featured on disc one, and it is unbelievably good. The build up, the drop, the vocals all work in favour of the track. The very dark ‘Insidious’ by Symbolic also appears on this disc. The very well produced Under This remix of ‘Rat Catcher’ is on the disc as well. The compilation also includes one of Simon’s most popular remixes – the remix for Armin’s ‘Ping Pong’.

Disc two kicks off with a solid melody – Photographer’s Intro Remix of ‘Rocket’, soothing track to listen to. Another very good melody follows, with Andre van Reese’s gem of a track ‘Recovered’. One of the best productions on the mix ‘Solcitude’ by Menno De Jong and Adam Ellis is also featured on this disc. Paul Rigel features on the disc with ‘Never Look Back’ which has a fantastic breakdown and an even better build up leading to the drop. Allan Watts appears on the disc as well, for the remix he did for one of the biggest tracks of the year – Armin van Buuren’s ‘Save My Night’. Photographer’s very own soothing melody ‘Rebound’ is also a part of this disc, as is his remix for another Armin track ‘ Who’s Afraid of 138’. Talking about remixes of Armin tracks, Witness45’s stunning remix of ‘I Don’t Own You’ is the closing track of the mix.

When its released on Armada, you can safely assume that it will be a quality mix, and it rightly is so. Disc 1 features the faster banging tracks, whereas Disc 2 has the uplifting melodies. Definitely looking forward to more such mixes.

You can grab the compilation right here.
