I’ll be honest with you. There used to be a time when I could recognize all the EDM tracks on my playlist within the first 10 seconds.
However, with the sheer volume of new dance music coming out on a daily basis those days are gone. Over the last 10 years or so, dance music has seen a massive rise in popularity. What used to be me listening to maybe 20 tracks a week has become the same number, or more per day. Yet, there are still some tracks that have stood the test of time and will no matter what definitely be remembered throughout the next 10,20,40 years… in my opinion.
Here they are:
1. Cinema – Benny Benassi feat. Gary Go
The idea to write this article actually came u the other day when I was in the gym and this track came up on shuffle. Cinema came out 5 years ago in 2012 and whether you heard it then or not, you’ve heard it in some form at some party, event, or festival. I still remember first seein the music video late at night on television (cos that’s the only time Vh1 would play dance music… post 11pm)
2. Sun & Moon – Above & Beyond feat. Richard Bedford
I had no idea who or what Above & Beyond were when I first heard Sun & Moon. All I knew was that I HAD TO have this track in my playlist. The lyrics, the vocals, the complete feel of the track gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Released in 2011, Sun & Moon is a song that I shall truly never ever forget.
3. Apollo – Hardwell feat. Amba Shepherd
Apollo was and still is one of Hardwell’s best tracks. It’s also his most famous track which is probably why the Dutchman still can’t go without playing some form of Apollo in his mixes. It’s the track that got him to the top and even till today, any dance music fan would dance enthusiastically to the drop of Apollo. Amba Shepherd’s vocals just add on to the beauty of this piece.
4. Reload – Sebastian Ingrosso & Tommy Trash feat. John Martin
A 2012 release, Reload is every DJ’s go to to get the crowd wild in the clubs. The tracks impeccable production, along with John Martin’s voice are the perfect energy boost for any party. There is NO WAY you have ever attended a party or festival and not heard Reload.
5. Scary Monsters & Nice Spirits – Skrillex
Can’t believe its been 7 years since the release of this bad boy. Skrillex’s big break and many people’s official introduction to dubstep, Scary Monsters & Nice Spirits is still one of the artist’s best produced works. It was one of the first tracks that really confused your mind and definitely horrified your parents if they ever heard you playing it aloud.
6. Ghosts n Stuff – Deadmau5 feat. Rob Swire
Released in 2008, Ghosts n Stuff is a deadmau5 classic. It’s definitely one of my favourite tracks and I kinda like the music video too. It shows deadmau5’ goofy ghost roaming around town like a drunk Joel probably would. There isn’t much to say here, just enjoy the track.
7. Lethal Industry – Tiësto
Definitely the oldest track on this list, Tiësto’s Lethal Industry is already a classic. Released in 1999, Lethal Industry was featured on Tiësto’s first album! These were the good old days of Tiësto’s trance music. This was a time before CDJs were used for DJing. Just check out the music video. You can see the Dutchman playing on vinyls as the crowd goes wild in a typical 90s rave.
8. Astronomia – Tony Igy
We’ve all heard this track in the club sometime around 2010-2013. Tony Igy’s Astronomia was released in 2010 and while the track isn’t as famous as the others on the list or from a ‘Top 100’ artist, its definitely that you’ll be remembering for a long time.
9. Don’t You Worry Child – Swedish House Mafia feat. John Martin
Swedish House Mafia’s final track, a farewell anthem if you may, is the one track we’ve all sung out loud at concerts. 2012’s biggest track next to reload, Don’t You Worry Child got people emotional in so many ways. A lot of us were upset about the trio breaking up, a lot of us were excited for seeing them for the last time, but in all it’s one of the most nostalgic tracks for anyone who parties to it with SHM.
10. Titanium – David Guetta feat. Sia
Released in 2011, Titanium was one of David Guetta’s biggest hits from his album ‘Nothing But The Beat’. Featuring the vocals of Sia, Titanium is the one track I feel has been played too many times. The Australian singer wrote ‘Titanium’ for David Guetta, and the song was originally supposed to feature Mary J Blige. However, Guetta went on to release Sia’s version without telling her. “I was like, ‘What the fuck?’ I’d spent such a long time building what I thought was my own credible music career, and I found myself embarrassed by the commercialism of that music,” she told The Sunday Times. “But, of course, when it buys you a house, it stops feeling like such a bad thing.” She also later confirmed that Titanium was the best thing to happen to her career.
