Diplo – Man or Machine?
The rate at which Diplo releases new music has always been astonishing and in these pandemic times, he has made the most of the time he’s had on hand to do innovative live streams and stay connected with his fans in addition to unleashing a whole lot of new music.
Diplo has been a part of many collaborative supergroups and also recently started his new solo country music avatar under his real name, Thomas Wesley. Since breaking into the dance music scene in the early 2000’s he has worked with all the biggest names in the world of pop music. From Usher to Beyonce and Justin Beiber to Madonna just to name a few.
From Major Lazer to Jack U, here are all his current projects and our picks on our favorite songs from each.
Thomas Wesley Pentz a.k.a Diplo is a multi-genre DJ and producer with unparalleled versatility. In addition, he is also the main man behind Mad Decent. His alias, short for Diplodocus, derives from his childhood fascination with dinosaurs.
One of Diplo’s longest-running projects, Major Lazer is a Jamaican-American electronic dance music trio, which in addition to Diplo which currently includes DJs Walshy Fire and Ape Drums. Founded in 2008 by Diplo and Switch, who was with the group till 2011, he was then replaced by both Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. In June 2019, Jillionaire left the group and was replaced by Ape Drums.
Formed in 2013, Jack Ü is the collaborative project between Diplo and Skrillex. According to Skrillex, the collaboration is called ‘Jack Ü’ because it refers to how the music “jacks you up” with its high energy beats and bassline.
Started in 2018, LSD is the supergroup consisting of British musician and rapper Labrinth, Australian singer-songwriter Sia and American DJ and producer Diplo. Their first 5 track album, Labrinth, Sia & Diplo Present… LSD was released in early 2019.
Silk City is Diplo’s collaborative project with British electronic music producer Mark Ronson. Starting off only 2 years ago in 2018, the duo has collaborated with a multitude of artists including Dua Lipa, Daniel Merriweather, and Desiigner among others.
Diplo presents Thomas Wesley is Diplo’s county moniker. In an unexpected turn, Diplo released a country music alias and released an album under it as well. As a kid growing up in the South Diplo attributed it to his early influences of Country music growing up.
