Love is Blind is a thought-provoking series that poses a major question: Is love truly blind? The reality show, which has been making waves on Netflix since 2020, has seen many couples come together in holy matrimony. Yet more often than not, viewers watch through the cracks of their fingers as these romances crumble apart in betrayal and heartache.
Just this weekend, Colleen Reed and Matt Bolton announced their divorce in a joint statement posted to Instagram. This marks the 4th married couple to part ways out of the 14 Love is Blind marriages total, leading some fans of the series to wonder whether the reality show should continue on. Beyond the fact that a quarter of these couples are getting divorced after only a handful of years together, there are several other reasons audiences think it’s time to close the curtains on Love is Blind. Why do viewers think Netflix should throw in the towel when it comes to the reality dating series once and for all?
Love is Blind Producers Accused of Poor Working Conditions
In 2023, allegations of toxic working conditions on the Love is Blind set came to light. Fans were shocked and horrified to learn that producers of the reality series were reportedly underfeeding the contestants to ramp up negative emotions, while at the same time over-supplying them with alcohol to get them drunk. While the intent was to create messy drama for the reality series, these poor conditions came at the expense of the contestants’ mental health.
Multiple former participants complained about the toxic working conditions surrounding the reality dating series, including cast members who desperately wanted to back out of the show, yet had no choice but to stay due to pressure from showrunners.
Furthermore, several participants on Love is Blind fell into a depression after filming the reality series due to the unfavorable conditions on set. Nick Thompson, who appeared on season 2 of the hit show, said he was fired from his job after joining Love is Blind, and hasn’t been able to find work since. “You thrust us into this situation without any support, and everything’s amplified,” Nick told Business Insider. “It literally ruins lives.”
Too Many Contestants On the Netflix Series Are Disingenuous About Their Quest For Love
Unfortunately, many contestants on Love is Blind join the Netflix show for all the wrong reasons. Rather than hoping to find love, many only hope to find fame. Several former Love is Blind stars have gone on to become influencers once their respective seasons wrapped up, leading fans to believe some contestants were only participating in order to gain more social media followers as well as monetary gain.
This sucks out all the romance from the reality show since it can often feel disingenuous and way off track from its original premise. What was supposed to be a thought-provoking series about genuine connection, became a fight for fame by any means necessary. Even if it means joining Love is Blind under false pretenses.
Lack of Admirable Couples
Although subjective, many fans are under the impression that the last great couple on the series was way back in season 1. (Do we even need to say their names?) The golden pair couple of the series, Lauren and Cameron Hamilton, were celebrated by millions for their tear-jerker romance and fairytale proposal. And while we’ve seen some cute couples since then, none have measured up in fans’ eyes to the season 1 pair.
Perhaps after 8 seasons of love, drama, and heartache, it’s time to say goodbye to the Netflix reality series. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comment section below.
