Christina Applegate posted the sad news that her dad, Robert Applegate, passed away just one week ago.
On the MeSsy podcast with JoAnna Garcia Swisher, the 53-year-old actress shared what was really going on inside and that she hadn’t been letting herself grieve for a while. “This is the first time I’ve really cried. I think kind of, like, I wasn’t allowing myself to have that yet,” she honestly shared, saying she had been so busy with other things and hadn’t had the time to actually sit down and wrap her head around her dad’s passing.

Christina Applegate also shared that, as very prepared as she and her family were, knowing her dad was close to the end of his life, it still hit hard. “Is that an excuse for not feeling? Because you know that someone’s gonna go?”, she reflected upon the complex feelings of losing a loved one-even when you’re prepared for it. The Dead to Me star elaborated on her relationship with her dad, mentioning that though her parents had separated when she was only five months old, her father remained a part of her life over the years.

Coupled with this painful loss, Christina has been battling multiple sclerosis, a chronic autoimmune disease she was diagnosed with in 2021. The actress spoke candidly of how MS affects her daily life, mentioning there are often times sharp pains and aches that leave her in tears. “I lay in bed screaming – like, the sharp pains, the ache, that squeezing,” she said.
Christina said simple tasks have become increasingly hard for her. From not being able to pick up her phone to holding onto a TV remote, MS has taken a big hit on her body. “I can’t even pick up my phone sometimes. Sometimes, I can’t even hold them,” Christina said.
Plus, getting out of bed has been a challenge in itself when almost every step she takes, especially in her feet, feels like walking on “lava.” The Anchorman actress made light of the situation with typical humor, saying that she will be wearing diapers due to her limited physical abilities. This is a juxtaposition against a perceived comic situation that shows just how serious everyday life sometimes can get.
Christina is candid about her father’s passing and about the struggles she has with her MS; that not only shows the great vulnerability but also the strength she carries while facing such huge personal challenges.
