Christopher McQuarrie, the writer and producer behind the hit sequel Top Gun: Maverick, has revealed that the story for Top Gun 3 is already figured out.
In a recent chat with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie made it clear, there’s no mystery about where the story goes next.
When asked if Top Gun 3 was harder to crack than Maverick, McQuarrie didn’t hesitate. “No, it’s already in the bag,” he said. That simple. He confirmed the idea is locked and ready, adding, “Yeah, I already know what it is.”
Turns out, the winning concept came from screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who also wrote Maverick and the upcoming Brad Pitt racing film F1. According to McQuarrie, Kruger pitched something that immediately clicked. “We had one conversation about it and the framework is there,” he said. “It wasn’t hard.”
The fact that the idea came together so smoothly was a surprise, even for McQuarrie. “I thought it would be [hard],” he admitted. But once they sat down and started throwing ideas around, the pieces fell into place quickly.
Fans of the franchise might be relieved to hear that the focus remains on story and emotional depth, not just fast jets and explosive action. McQuarrie emphasized that emotional stakes are what really carry the film. “It’s not the action,it’s the emotion,” he said. “That’s why these movies work.”
McQuarrie’s track record with high-stakes blockbusters, especially his work with Tom Cruise on the Mission: Impossible series, makes his involvement a solid sign that Top Gun 3 is in good hands. And at 62, Cruise doesn’t seem to be slowing down either.
While there’s no official release date yet, fans can rest easy knowing that the story isn’t just in development, it’s ready to fly. With Top Gun: Maverick having grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, the pressure to deliver another hit is massive. But if McQuarrie and Kruger’s confidence is anything to go by, they’re more than up to the challenge.
The original Top Gun turned Cruise into a superstar back in 1986, following Maverick’s journey through the elite Fighter Weapons School and his rivalry with Iceman. Top Gun: Maverick picked up the story decades later, with Maverick now a mentor helping the next generation prepare for a nearly impossible mission.
So what’s next for Maverick? Details are under wraps, but with a plot “already in the bag,” it’s only a matter of time before audiences get another high,octane, emotionally charged ride.
One thing’s for sure, when Top Gun 3 hits, expectations will be sky,high.
