Deadpool Creator Rob Liefeld Slams Marvel, Cuts Ties Over ‘Embarrassing’ Premiere Snub

Rob Liefeld, the creator behind “Deadpool”, is officially done with Marvel.

And he’s not going quietly. After attending the “Deadpool & Wolverine” premiere, Liefeld claims he was deliberately sidelined by Disney and Marvel executives, leaving him feeling “embarrassed” and “diminished.”

The Fallout: Liefeld vs. Marvel

The comic book creator, who’s been working with Marvel for over 30 years, said he felt ignored at the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere in New York. According to him, he wasn’t acknowledged by key figures like Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and was even shut out of the afterparty.

Speaking on his Robservations podcast, Liefeld didn’t hold back: “It was meant to embarrass, diminish, defeat me.” He added that after receiving the cold shoulder, he got the message loud and clear—Marvel didn’t want him involved.

Deadpool’s Creator, But Not in the Spotlight

Liefeld, who introduced Deadpool to the world in 1991, had hoped to have more involvement in the film’s marketing and promotion. He also requested a unique credit, similar to how Marvel recognized Wolverine’s co-creators in past films. Instead, he was met with resistance and, according to him, outright hostility.

His behind-the-scenes battle with Marvel escalated a month before the film’s release when he pushed for more recognition. “Marvel’s treatment of creators has never been their strength,” Liefeld said, emphasizing that the billion-dollar franchise wouldn’t exist without the artists who originally conceived these characters.

“We Are NOT Fox!” – Liefeld’s Final Straw

Liefeld revealed that his reps were allegedly “screamed at” by Marvel executives, with one shouting, “We are NOT Fox!”—a reference to how Marvel’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox changed the “Deadpool” franchise’s leadership.

Feeling disrespected, Liefeld decided to cut ties with Marvel entirely. “At some point, you have to realize it’s just not worth it,” he said.

Ryan Reynolds’ Role in the Drama

Liefeld has previously voiced his opinion that Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds should have full creative control over the franchise. Given Reynolds’ hands-on approach and his deep connection to the character, Liefeld suggested that he should be the one calling the shots.

Whether Reynolds steps up to support Liefeld publicly remains to be seen, but the actor has been known to back those who’ve helped shape the character he’s so closely associated with.

Will Liefeld’s Exit Change Anything?

Marvel has yet to publicly respond to Liefeld’s claims. But his exit raises bigger questions about how the studio treats the creators behind its biggest properties. With the Deadpool & Wolverine movie being a massive hit, Liefeld’s absence from the Marvel fold could leave a sour note for long-time fans of the character.

What do you think? Should Marvel have given Liefeld more respect, or was this just a business move? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!
