Demi Moore isn’t letting her Oscar loss slow her down, she’s already booked her next big role, and it’s way out there.
The 62-year-old actress is officially set to lead Strange Arrivals, an alien-themed romance based on the bizarre true story of Betty and Barney Hill, who claimed they were abducted by extraterrestrials in 1961. Yep, real-life alien abduction turned into a movie, and Demi’s right in the middle of it.
The film is based on the hit podcast by Toby Ball and will be directed by Oscar winner Roger Ross Williams. Jane Anderson is penning the script, and Demi will star opposite Rustin’s Colman Domingo. The project is already buzzing, and for good reason, this is the kind of weird, emotional, and star-studded storytelling people eat up.
Williams couldn’t be more hyped about the cast. Speaking to Deadline, he said, “Demi and Colman coming together for the first time to bring Jane Anderson’s beautiful script that illuminates the human condition to life will be magic.” He also gave a big shout-out to the producers at See-Saw, calling them one of the best in the game when it comes to artist-driven stories.
The movie centers on Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial couple in the early 60s who became the first widely publicized case of alien abduction. They were driving home from their honeymoon when they claimed to have been taken aboard a UFO. Their story blew up, landing them in the media spotlight and making them early icons in the UFO conspiracy world. Strange Arrivals will dive into what really happened that night and how their lives spiraled after the world started paying attention.
Demi’s casting comes right after a tough Oscars moment. She was nominated for Best Actress for her shocking turn in The Substance, but the statue went to Mikey Madison for Anora. At the Time100 Summit in NYC, Demi admitted she felt the weight of her fans’ disappointment. “I’m sorry to everyone who had hopes for me,” she said. “I did feel a lot of collective disappointment that felt bigger than me.”
But she’s not bitter. She’s just real about it. “Would winning be nice? Sure. But I didn’t win. That’s just the truth,” Demi shared. “I really do believe life is happening for me, not to me. Even when it sucks, there’s always something to learn.”
Whether it’s chasing Oscars or aliens, Demi Moore clearly isn’t slowing down. And if Strange Arrivals is even half as wild as the true story it’s based on, we’re all in for something unforgettable.
