Diddy Complains He Looks Like a Koala in Court Sketches and Tries to Charm Jury

Sean “Diddy” Combs is making waves in the courtroom, not just for the serious charges he’s facing but also for some unusual moments during his high-profile federal trial.

The hip-hop mogul and former Bad Boy Records kingpin recently made a bizarre request to the courtroom sketch artist. During a lunch break before the jury was seated, Diddy told the artist, “Soften me up a bit, you’re making me look like a koala bear.” The comment brought some humor to an otherwise tense atmosphere, revealing the unusual pressures on celebrities in the courtroom spotlight.

Courtroom sketch artist Jane Rosenberg, who has been documenting Combs’ trial in Manhattan federal court, explained to Reuters that such requests aren’t new. Earlier this year, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani asked her to make him look less like a dog in his sketch during his own trial, and Donald Trump Jr. once asked for a sketch that made him “look sexy” during a civil fraud case. Rosenberg’s sketches are vital since cameras and photos are banned in federal courtrooms, meaning the courtroom artist’s work often shapes public perception of high-profile defendants.

The trial itself is extremely serious. Sean Combs is charged with five counts related to racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Prosecutors allege that he organized lavish “freak off” parties, which involved hiring prostitutes as entertainment and allegedly drugging both the sex workers and attendees. These parties reportedly featured high-profile guests, with the victims filmed in compromising positions and blackmailed using the footage. The case exploded into public view when Combs’ ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, who filed a lawsuit against him in November 2023, revealed details that helped open the investigation.

During the trial, Cassie’s ex-girlfriend, testifying under the pseudonym “Jane”, told jurors she fell “head over heels” for Combs after meeting him in late 2020. She described him as charming and attentive but claimed that over time, the relationship involved heavy drug use. Jane testified that Combs introduced her to drugs like cocaine, ecstasy, molly, and ketamine, and even flew her out for a birthday trip to an island in 2021. She shared stories of the nicknames they used for each other, “Bert” and “Ernie,” named after the Sesame Street characters. The testimony painted a picture of a manipulative relationship, with Jane saying Combs pursued her relentlessly before allegedly exploiting her.

Despite the serious charges, Combs’ courtroom demeanor has sparked controversy. In contrast to his flashy red carpet looks, he’s appeared in sweaters and neutral tones, with noticeably grayer hair that reflects the stress of the trial. But he’s also been caught nodding and making eye contact with jurors during testimony, actions Judge Arun Subramanian called “absolutely unacceptable.” After noticing Diddy’s behavior, the judge warned that if it happened again, Combs could be ejected from the courtroom. The judge’s stern warning came after a brief interaction the day before where Diddy mouthed “cold” to a juror who was rubbing his arms to keep warm, leading to a smile and nod in return.

The trial is taking place in the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse in Lower Manhattan, an intimidating federal courthouse that has hosted other notorious cases involving Ghislaine Maxwell, Donald Trump, and Bernie Madoff. Security is tight. Visitors must separate electronic devices from their belongings for inspection, and everything from laptops to smartwatches is confiscated before entry. A unique poker chip system manages the number of electronic devices visitors bring in. Reporters and members of the public have camped out overnight just for a chance to witness the trial, with overflow rooms opened due to high demand.

On May 5, jury selection began, with Combs entering the courtroom shackle-free but stripped of his former mogul aura. He appeared focused and attentive, greeting his defense attorneys warmly and locking eyes with jurors and media alike. After a grueling jury selection process, Combs even embraced his female defense attorneys and mouthed “thank you” to supporters in the gallery. As opening statements kicked off on May 12, the buzz around the trial only grew louder, with media lining up in the early morning hours to secure seats inside the packed courtroom.

Combs’ trial is expected to last about eight weeks and will continue to draw significant media and public attention as details unfold. From courtroom sketches to intense witness testimonies and judge’s warnings, the trial has become a spectacle that shows the fall of a man who once ruled the music empire. The coming weeks will reveal if Combs can defend himself against the allegations or if his legacy will be forever tarnished by these charges.
