Dua Lipa has finally confirmed the news fans have been buzzing about for months, she’s engaged to actor Callum Turner.
The singer spills all the romantic details in her new British Vogue interview, including how they met, how he proposed, and how he managed to pick out the perfect engagement ring. The news comes after The Sun revealed earlier this year that the Fantastic Beasts star had popped the question.
Their story starts in the most unexpected way: dinner with Dua’s dad. She says they were introduced at a restaurant, where Callum instantly made a great impression. At the time, she didn’t think much of it, until they bumped into each other by pure coincidence a year later in Los Angeles. “Oh, it’s that really hot guy from The River Cafe,” she remembers thinking. As if that wasn’t romantic enough, they were both reading the same book. Fate? She certainly thinks so.
Now, Dua confirms, “We’re engaged. It’s very exciting.” She shares that Callum custom-made the ring and went the extra mile to make it perfect. He got advice from Dua’s best friends and her sister, making sure the ring reflected her personality. “I’m obsessed with it,” she says. “It’s so me. It’s nice to know the person that you’re going to spend the rest of your life with knows you very well.”
Wedding bells won’t be ringing just yet, though. Dua’s currently on her Radical Optimism tour, and Callum is busy shooting, so for now, they’re just enjoying this happy moment together. “I want to finish my tour. Callum’s shooting, so we’re just enjoying this period,” she adds. And while she admits she was never the type to daydream about her wedding, the engagement has changed things. “All of a sudden I’m like, ‘Oh, what would I wear?’”
The British Vogue cover story dives into more than just her engagement. Dua reflects on her teenage years growing up in North London and Kosovo. She moved to Kosovo at age 12, but with her parents’ blessing, returned to London to chase her music dreams. She stayed with a family friend while attending secondary school. But school wasn’t her main focus, Dua failed her A Levels because she was always out clubbing around Camden. “When I was young, trying to get into clubs was kind of easy because every bouncer was Albanian,” she said. “All I needed to do was speak Albanian to the bouncer.”
She says that same love of nightlife shaped her music. “My whole goal, with my show, is ‘I want to start people dancing, and I want them to leave for home dancing.’ And I guess that has to do with my love of going out and bringing people together in that time.”
Back in January, The Sun had already reported that Callum proposed and that the two were planning a future together. At the time, a source close to the couple said, “Dua and Callum are so in love and know this is forever. They are engaged and couldn’t be happier. Dua has had one of the best years of her career professionally, and this is the cherry on the cake. Callum is such a solid support for Dua, and they make a wonderful couple. Their family and friends are so happy. It’s been an amazing Christmas for them.”
Now, with Dua confirming it herself and sharing all the romantic behind-the-scenes moments, from the custom ring to the book coincidence, it’s official: this is one celebrity love story we’re absolutely rooting for.
