Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift might be pop royalty, but when it comes to their friendship, things are surprisingly low-key. On the latest episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Sheeran revealed that he sees Swift only about four times a year.
“I see her when I see her,” Sheeran, 34, told host Alex Cooper. But when they do hang out, it’s not a quick coffee or a backstage catch-up. It’s a full-blown, six-hour deep-dive session. “Proper sit down, six-hour catch-ups,” he explained. “I think that’s like a really nice way to do it.”
The longtime besties first linked up professionally in 2012 for the track “Everything Has Changed” off Swift’s Red album. Their bond deepened during her Red tour, where Sheeran was the opening act and essentially her daily travel buddy.
“I lived in Nashville, and she lived in Nashville. And we used to fly to and from the gigs together and do all sorts of [stuff],” Sheeran recalled. “I literally spent almost every single day with her for about six months.”
The nostalgia came flooding back recently when Sheeran had to dig through old messages for a lawsuit. “I was in these court cases for, like, two years,” he said, referencing his copyright battle over “Thinking Out Loud.” As part of the legal process, he had to hand over voice notes and text messages from his old devices.
“Going through all my old texts with people that I’ve known for that long, it was really, like, nostalgic,” Sheeran shared. That experience even led to a new track, “Old Phone,” which was born after the surreal process of revisiting a digital time capsule.
“I switched it on, it was like going into a time machine,” Sheeran said on The Tonight Show. “The first text was my friend that had passed away the year before. The second text was an argument with an ex-girlfriend. The third text was a family member I haven’t spoken to in 10 years. The fourth text was another mate that died.”
Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran’s friendship has spanned more than a decade, and even with fame, tours, and legal drama in the mix, they still make space for each other. Just not all the time – and maybe that’s the secret.
It’s not about how often you see someone. It’s about who you can still talk to for six hours like no time has passed at all.
