Freed and Focused: A$AP Rocky on Trial Trauma, Family and What’s Next

A$AP Rocky has opened up about just how terrified he was during his felony assault trial, admitting he was “scared for [his] freedom” as the jury reached a decision.

The 36-year-old rapper, real name Rakim Mayers, was recently found not guilty of firing a gun at a former friend during a high-profile trial in Los Angeles. Now that it’s over, Rocky isn’t sugarcoating how intense the whole thing was for him emotionally.

Talking to Variety, A$AP Rocky revealed the mental toll the case took on him. He said staying positive was the only way to keep from spiraling, even though the fear of being found guilty was always in the back of his mind. “It was definitely gut-wrenching and nerve-racking,” he said. “I was definitely scared for my freedom.” Rocky added that he had to fight off negative thoughts because he didn’t want to accidentally manifest a bad outcome.

Even though he was feeling the pressure, the verdict brought huge relief. He thanked the jury, the judge, his legal team, and, most of all, his mother and girlfriend, though he made it clear that his biggest thanks go to God. “All praises and credit have to go to God,” he said, admitting he leaned heavily on prayer even though he doesn’t consider himself religious. “I was praying the whole time he was reading off the verdict. And my prayers were answered.”

Now that the storm has passed, A$AP Rocky is determined not to let the trauma weigh him down. He’s got a ton on his plate, music, fashion, parenthood, and more. With two young kids, RZA and Riot, and a third baby on the way with Rihanna, Rocky says he’s focusing on what matters and moving forward. “I’ve got Cannes to go to. I’ve got an album to make. I’ve got fashion shows to do… I got sneakers to drop. I got glasses to be the new creative director. I’ve got children,” he shared. “Why would I dwell on that dark-ass shit?”

Despite everything, A$AP Rocky seems laser-focused on the future, even if the trial shook him up more than he let on at the time. And with a new album and more projects lined up, it’s clear he’s ready to put the courtroom behind him.
