Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ movie director Sam Wrench is officially stepping into another iconic music-driven project: a remake of 1992’s The Bodyguard.
Warner Bros. has confirmed Wrench will helm the reboot of the beloved romantic thriller, which originally starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. The story followed Houston’s character, superstar Rachel Marron, as she’s forced to hire a former Secret Service agent, Frank Farmer (Costner), to protect her from a dangerous stalker. What starts as a job turns into a deeply emotional, romantic, and suspenseful ride that made The Bodyguard one of the biggest hits of its time.
The script is currently being written by Jonathan Abrams, known for Clint Eastwood’s upcoming Juror #2. This version replaces an earlier screenplay draft penned by Tony-winning playwright Matthew Lopez. While no casting announcements have been made yet, anticipation is already building around who will take on the legendary lead roles.
The Bodyguard was a cultural juggernaut in 1992. It became the second-highest-grossing film of the year globally and received two Academy Award nominations. Of course, its soundtrack – led by Houston’s unforgettable rendition of “I Will Always Love You” – became a historic best-seller.
Now, with Sam Wrench at the helm – a director who’s proved he can navigate music, emotion, and cinematic spectacle with Taylor Swift’s massive Eras Tour concert movie – the reboot promises to honor the original while updating it for a new generation.
Warner Bros. Film Group execs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy confirmed Wrench’s appointment during an interview with Deadline. While reflecting on the film industry’s changing landscape, Abdy acknowledged the challenge of getting modern audiences into theaters. “The pressure hasn’t changed much over the years in terms of picking the right movies. What’s more difficult now is figuring out how to get people out of the house,” she said.
Wrench’s work on Eras Tour showcased his ability to blend intimacy with grandeur, which makes him a compelling choice to revive a property as beloved and emotionally layered as The Bodyguard.
So far, no official word on casting or release date – but with this kind of talent attached, the project already has fans talking.
