Inside Gwyneth Paltrow’s Ski Lawsuit Battle: Why She Fought for That $1 Verdict

Gwyneth Paltrow has never avoided controversy, and that extends into her 2023 ski lawsuit.

She is an actress and wellness mogul, most famous for acting in Iron Man and the founder of the lifestyle brand Goop. The actress found herself in court after a retired optometrist, Dr. Terry Sanderson, sued her for $300,000; he claimed she ran into him while skiing in Utah in 2016 and caused him lasting physical and emotional damage. But candidly speaking, Paltrow insisted the opposite happened-it was Sanderson who skied into her.

After an eight-day trial, the jury ruled in Paltrow’s favor and gave her a symbolic $1 plus legal fees. Still, the outcome-as positive as it was-didn’t silence the star’s frustration with the legal process. The trial of her lawsuit, discussed recently on The World’s First Podcast, led Paltrow to describe how it represented “everything that’s wrong with our legal system.” She candidly said it was unimaginable-if not just flat-out ridiculous-that someone would ski into your back, knock you down, and then sue you: “The idea that someone could ski into your back and knock you down and then sue you. I was like, ‘This is everything that’s wrong with our legal system.'” To her, the lawsuit was ridiculous from day one, and important to fight out rather than letting it be a precedent for similar baseless claims in the future.

The incident itself occurred at the ski resort Deer Valley in Park City, Utah, back in 2016. Sanderson was then 69 and took a position that Paltrow had caused the crash by skiing into him from behind. However, Paltrow had a very different version of events, testifying that Sanderson was uphill of her, then hit her from behind and threw her down, injuring her ribs.

During the trial, Paltrow’s lawyers brought out the inconsistency in the recollection of the incident by Sanderson through expert testimony on the mechanics of the crash. For Paltrow, the whole litigation process was a nightmare, one that was putting undue amounts of stress on her and exhausting her.

She said that though she didn’t want to give in to the claim, she also had to be practical with regard to the psychological toll it exacted from her. “It was ridiculous. That’s why I felt like I had to fight it. I was like, ‘I’m not going to be shaken down here,'” she said during the podcast. Still, Paltrow countersued for $1, not only as a symbolic gesture but to hold Sanderson accountable, as she saw it, for what she considered a frivolous lawsuit. Following the verdict, Paltrow expressed her relief and satisfaction with how the case was conducted by the jury and the judge on social media: “I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity,” she said on Instagram. “I am pleased with the outcome, and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case.”

Her lawyers also issued a statement similar to hers, pointing out that Paltrow had always stood for what was right and demanded justice. Attorney Steve Owens added, “We are pleased with this unanimous outcome and appreciate the judge and jury’s thoughtful handling of the case. Gwyneth has a history of advocating for what she believes in. This situation was no different, and she will continue to stand up for what is right.” Paltrow won her case, but she believes that it never should have reached trial.

Her comments come into a larger context about the state of the judiciary today and the proliferation of frivolous lawsuits. To her, this was not just about winning a case; it was a case of standing firm against what she saw as a claim that was not only legal but also unjust and sending a message regarding the importance of personal integrity.

Many have come out since the trial to commend Paltrow for the calmness she portrayed and for refusing to back down from a lawsuit that she described as baseless.

That was an emotionally draining thing for her to have to do; she felt compelled to proclaim publicly and legally that she was not at fault. While the lawsuit is now behind her, the message of Paltrow about flaws in the legal system still remains, as many are left questioning if enough is being done in handling such cases differently in the future.
