Gwyneth Paltrow has never been one to shy away from controversy, and her 2023 ski lawsuit was no exception.
The actress and wellness mogul, known for her role in Iron Man and for founding the lifestyle brand Goop, found herself in a legal battle after Dr. Terry Sanderson, a retired optometrist, sued her for $300,000. Sanderson alleged that Paltrow collided with him while skiing in Utah in 2016, which allegedly left him with lasting physical and emotional damage. But Paltrow, in her typical candid style, insisted that the opposite occurred, that it was Sanderson who skied into her.
After an eight-day trial, the jury sided with Paltrow, and she was awarded a symbolic $1 plus legal fees. But the outcome, while favorable, didn’t silence the star’s frustration with the legal process. Speaking about the trial on The World’s First Podcast, Paltrow explained her belief that the lawsuit represented “everything that’s wrong with our legal system.” She was outspoken about the absurdity of the case, saying, “The idea that someone could ski into your back and knock you down and then sue you… I was like, ‘This is everything that’s wrong with our legal system.’” For her, the lawsuit was ridiculous from the start, and she felt it was important to fight it rather than let it set a precedent for similar baseless claims in the future.
The ski accident itself took place in 2016 at the Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah. Sanderson, who was 69 at the time, claimed that Paltrow caused the crash by skiing into him from behind. However, Paltrow’s version of events was very different. She testified that Sanderson was the one who hit her, causing her to fall and injure her ribs. During the trial, Paltrow’s legal team presented evidence that Sanderson’s recollection of the incident was inconsistent, and expert witnesses testified about the mechanics of the crash.
The entire legal process became an ordeal for Paltrow, who found the situation stressful and exhausting. She admitted that while she initially didn’t want to give in to the claim, she also had to contend with the emotional toll it took on her. “It was ridiculous. That’s why I felt like I had to fight it. I was like, ‘I’m not going to be shaken down here,’” she said during the podcast.
Paltrow’s countersuit for $1 was designed not only as a symbolic gesture but also as a way to hold Sanderson accountable for what she viewed as a frivolous lawsuit. After the verdict, she expressed her relief and satisfaction on social media, thanking the jury and the judge for their careful handling of the case. “I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity,” she shared on Instagram, adding, “I am pleased with the outcome, and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case.”
Her legal team also released a statement echoing her sentiments, emphasizing Paltrow’s long-standing history of advocating for justice and standing up for what she believes in. Attorney Steve Owens said, “We are pleased with this unanimous outcome and appreciate the judge and jury’s thoughtful handling of the case. Gwyneth has a history of advocating for what she believes in, this situation was no different, and she will continue to stand up for what is right.”
Though Paltrow emerged victorious, she remains adamant that the case should never have gone to trial in the first place. Her statements resonate with a larger conversation about the state of the legal system and the prevalence of frivolous lawsuits. For her, it wasn’t just about winning the case, it was about standing firm against what she saw as an unjust legal claim and sending a message about the importance of personal integrity.
In the aftermath of the trial, many have praised Paltrow for her poise and for not backing down in the face of what she considered a baseless lawsuit. Despite the emotional strain it placed on her, she felt it was necessary to publicly and legally assert her innocence. And while the lawsuit is behind her, Paltrow’s message about the flaws in the legal system continues to resonate, leaving many to question if enough is being done to address such cases in the future.
