A newly released medical examiner report has confirmed that actress Aubrey Plaza and filmmaker Jeff Baena were separated for four months before Baena’s tragic passing on January 3, 2025.
The revelation sheds light on the circumstances leading up to his death, including his struggles with mental health and therapy sessions following their split.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s report, Plaza, 40, and Baena, 47, ended their relationship in September 2024. Just a month later, Baena made concerning remarks to Plaza, prompting her to ask a friend to perform a welfare check on him.
Following the welfare check in October, Baena reportedly began therapy. Documents indicate he had been experiencing “recent marital difficulties” with Plaza.
Baena was found deceased in his home by his dogwalker on January 3, 2025. His last known communication was a text message to Plaza at 10:36 a.m. on the day of his death. The medical examiner ruled his death as suicide.
Following Baena’s passing, Plaza and his family released a joint statement calling his death an “unimaginable tragedy.” They expressed gratitude for the support they received and asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Jeff Baena was a well-respected filmmaker with numerous directing and writing credits. He made his directorial debut with Life After Beth, a zombie comedy starring Plaza. He also created the anthology series Cinema Toast, which aired on Showtime in 2021 and marked Plaza’s directorial debut.
Baena’s contributions to independent cinema included films like Joshy, The Little Hours, and Spin Me Round. His unique storytelling approach earned him a loyal fanbase and critical acclaim.
Plaza and Baena began dating in 2011 and tied the knot in May 2021. Plaza subtly revealed their marriage in an Instagram post, referring to Baena as her “darling husband.” A representative later confirmed their union.
In a 2019 interview, Plaza spoke about their relationship dynamic, emphasizing the importance of independence. “We are forced to be independent, take little breaks, go off and do our things and come back. It’s kind of fun. Nothing is ever the same,” she stated.
Baena’s passing highlights the importance of mental health support. If you or someone you know is struggling, resources are available. Contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988, text “STRENGTH” to the Crisis Text Line at 741741, or visit 988lifeline.org for confidential support.
