Hilaria Baldwin has made a heart-wrenching confession in her new book, Manual Not Included, she genuinely thought Alec Baldwin was dead after a terrifying health scare back in 2023.
The Rust tragedy had already left the family shaken, but what followed for Alec pushed things to a whole new level. Hilaria described her husband’s physical and mental breakdown as a result of the intense stress he was carrying after the accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust in 2021.
Alec Baldwin, now 67, had been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and was under crushing public and legal pressure. According to Hilaria, his body just started shutting down. She wrote about how his hands went cold, how he could barely walk, and how she rushed him to the ER after he nearly collapsed. Doctors ran multiple tests but pinned it down to extreme stress. She said it was like watching Alec “turn off,” describing him as “a totally different man.”
Just days after the initial scare, things got even worse. She found Alec shaking and completely unable to stand, refusing medical attention with what she called his usual “Alec-curmudgeon” attitude. As their driver Mikey ran into the hospital for help, Hilaria feared the worst. “I was sure Alec was dead,” she wrote. “I thought I was going to vomit from feeling so helpless and heartbroken.”
Alec was hospitalized for a full week and couldn’t move without a walker. Despite this, he insisted on returning to finish filming Rust. To hide the truth from the cast and crew, they disguised his condition using an orthopedic boot and blamed it on a fake injury. Hilaria revealed they didn’t want to reveal just how broken Alec had become, both physically and mentally.
Alec was later diagnosed with PTSD, and Hilaria opened up about his emotional struggles on their reality show, The Baldwins. “Everyone who is close to Alec has seen his mental health decline,” she admitted. Alec himself got painfully real in a confessional, sharing that he would lie in bed, unable to get up, wondering why it wasn’t him who died in that tragic accident.
Though the charges against Alec Baldwin were dropped in April 2023, they came back in January 2024 and led to a trial that began in July. But just three days into the proceedings, the case collapsed and the charges were dismissed with prejudice, finally putting an end to that chapter, at least legally. But the scars clearly remain, and Hilaria’s account is a raw reminder of the toll it all took on Alec behind the scenes.
