Hollywood Who? Katherine Heigl Chooses Mom Life Over Red Carpets

Katherine Heigl is at peace with stepping back from Hollywood, and she’s not sugarcoating it.

The 27 Dresses star now lives in Utah with her husband, Josh Kelley, and their three kids, Naleigh, 15; Adalaide, 13; and Joshua, 8, and says the idea of leaving them behind for months of filming just doesn’t sit right with her.

“When they’re little, that’s the most delicious and exciting time,” she told E! News, “but when they’re teenagers is when they need you the most, and that’s where I’m at.” While she appreciates her years in the industry, Heigl is clear that being a present mom matters more right now. She said, “I just don’t see how I could go off and make a movie for three months or a television series for nine months.”

Living in Utah adds another barrier to Hollywood offers. “Nothing shoots in Utah, so I have to go on location,” she explained. “It’s not something I can fathom doing successfully.” The thought of splitting her attention between work and family worries her. “I think I would be so torn and divided,” she added.

Though she hasn’t entirely vanished from the screen—her last movie was Fear of Rain in 2021, and she wrapped Firefly Lane in 2023, she’s more selective now. She’s set to appear in That’s Amore!, a musical rom-com where she’ll play Patty Amore, but it’s far from a full-blown comeback.

Heigl also spoke openly about her internal debates on whether she should be hustling again. “Sometimes I ask myself if I should be in the game, if I should be hustling… and I just think I really don’t want to.” She no longer feels pressured by societal expectations to grind for roles. “If you don’t want that, then don’t do it.”

Despite some regrets about the time she missed with her kids during her earlier career, Heigl says she’s found “so much joy and contentment and clarity and grounding” in her current life. “I’m really happy and content… I am grateful to be here now.”
