Based on reports from CNN and ABC News, the Los Angeles Fire Department answered a medical call at the residence of Keaton and went on to take an individual to the hospital. Representatives of Keaton and local authorities have been contacted by USA TODAY for additional information, though as of Saturday evening, October 11, no further information had been provided about the cause of death.

Diane Keaton’s own career lasted over five decades, shaping generations of film enthusiasts with her own special combination of humor, fragility, and sincerity. She became a household name during the 1970s playing Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather series of films, and then she was awarded an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978 for her unforgettable performance as Annie Hall in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall.

Throughout the decades, Keaton’s movieography expanded with the addition of classics like Manhattan, The First Wives Club, and Something’s Gotta Give, making her one of Hollywood’s most cherished and long-lasting stars.

Her IMDb page states that Keaton was active until recently, working on the 2024 movies Arthur’s Whisky and Summer Camp. She also had three projects in pre-production, of which The Making Of, which also stars Blake Lively, Richard Gere, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, is notable.

After news of her passing, tributes flooded in from co-stars, filmmakers, and fans who were inspired by her legacy and spirit. Her humor, warmth, and authenticity on- and off-screen made her a beloved figure throughout generations.

Keaton’s last Instagram post, posted on April 11 for National Pet Day, was playful as she sat with her cherished Golden Retriever, Reggie, with the caption “Proof our pets have great taste too! Happy National Pet Day from HG & @diane_keaton.” It was followed by an earlier post on January 22, which was a message of support for the Palisades Fire victims, showcasing her kind heart and spirit of community.

During an interview with Interview Magazine in 2021, Keaton opened up about what mattered most to her – friendship, nature, and simplicity. “I cherish a very good friendship, like ours,” she explained to her friend, actress Carol Kane. “I walk my dog. I truly do love nature. I love discovering California. I like driving to Arizona.”. I suppose my favorite part about life is the fact that I am able to see. It is just so surreal.

In the same segment, Ariana Grande asked Keaton if it was anything like being thought of as “so iconic.” With typical modesty, Keaton said, “It’s hard for me to cope with that. I don’t think that way. I wake up in the morning and it’s me again. I’m just another guy getting up in the morning and saying, ‘Gee, I’d better feed the dog.'”

Those words now have particular resonance with her fans, reminding them of her humility amid a career characterized by glamour and artistic genius. Diane Keaton’s passing brings the curtain down on an era in Hollywood, but its effects – on movie-making, fashion, and society – will persist to be an inspiration for generations to come.
