Jenna Ortega is taking the next big step in her career, she’s ready to direct her own movie. The 22-year-old Wednesday star has spent almost a decade working on a script and feels that now is the time to finally bring her vision to life.
Ortega recently opened up to V Magazine, sharing that her script has been something she’s known she would make for years, but it’s only now that she feels prepared to take the leap into directing.
“I’ve had this idea for almost 10 years. It’s weird because I thought about it when I first started in the industry, and now I’m finally moving forward with it,” Ortega explained. She added that her career has given her the necessary experience and understanding to take on this challenge. “I think I needed a few years to figure out the steps to get things done,” she said. The timing, she believes, is perfect, as her journey has led her to this point.
Ortega’s desire to create and direct stories stems from her passion for trying new things. As a young actress, she’s already achieved a lot, but now, she’s more eager than ever to branch out and develop projects that resonate with her. She’s also working on a few other ideas, influenced by other writers and actors, which she says are characters and stories she hasn’t yet had the chance to explore.
While she will star in the upcoming project, Ortega is clear about her long-term goals: she wants to focus on directing. “For me, it’s always been about the challenge of trying something new, and I think directing is where my brain wants to be,” she shared. Despite starting her career in front of the camera, Ortega doesn’t see herself acting in many of her future projects. “I see this one being the start, but in the future, I want to direct more than I act,” she explained.
For Jenna Ortega, the need to push creatively is an essential part of who she is. Whether it’s acting, writing, or directing, she feels an “incessant need” to keep evolving and taking on new challenges. Her journey into directing is just the next step in what promises to be a groundbreaking career.
