Jeremy Renner is making waves with his bold comments about the potential follow-up to Marvel’s Hawkeye series, claiming that he turned down an offer to return due to a significantly lower pay offer.
In a TikTok clip posted on May 1, Renner revealed that he was offered “half” of his salary from the first season of the Disney+ series, despite the fact that the work would require even more effort and time from him.
The Mayor of Kingstown star, now 54, was upfront about his decision, explaining how the financial offer didn’t match the increased workload he would face. “They asked me to do season 2, and they offered me half the money,” Renner shared. “I’m like, ‘It’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount.’” Renner’s portrayal of Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, had earned rave reviews from fans, but it seems the second season offer didn’t reflect the star power he brought to the show.
As for why the lower offer was made, Renner joked that it may have had something to do with his recovery from a snowmobile accident in January 2023, where he was nearly crushed by his 14,000-pound Snowcat plow. The actor quipped, “Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got run over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season.” Renner, who suffered over 35 broken bones and had to endure months of rehabilitation, clearly didn’t find the offer fair in light of his ongoing recovery.
In the TikTok clip, Renner made it clear he wasn’t having it, telling the Disney brass, “I told them to go fly a kite.” He expressed disappointment that a return to Hawkeye didn’t happen but was quick to add that he was at peace with it, acknowledging that his body was probably thankful for the break.
Renner’s near-fatal accident and subsequent recovery have made headlines, with the actor documenting his journey in his memoir, My Next Breath, released on April 29. The book goes into intense detail about the ordeal, and Renner has stated that revisiting the experience in writing has been emotionally cathartic. He said, “I don’t not talk about it. It’s part of my life every day, and it’s always a wonderful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and how fragile the body is and how badass it is at recovery.”
Looking ahead, Renner is staying busy with multiple projects. He’ll star in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and his Mayor of Kingstown drama has already been renewed for a fourth season. Despite turning down Hawkeye season 2, it seems like Renner’s career is far from slowing down.
