Joel McHale is getting real about going bald.
The 53-year-old actor and comedian, best known for hosting The Soup and starring as Jeff Winger in Community, recently revealed that he’s “fully bald” even after four hair transplants that each cost around $10,000.
Appearing on the We Might Be Drunk podcast, McHale didn’t hold back. “Yeah, I’m fully bald,” he said. “[I’ve had] four transplants. I did it way back when it was a strip. Painful. Don’t do a strip. Do plucking. Now they pluck it from the whole back section, and it’s a miracle.”
Hair transplants have come a long way, but McHale was clear that they don’t stop hair loss entirely. “You’re still going bald, so that hair is still falling out,” he explained. “But the hair that you put there is growing. You’ll still thin, because the hair that was going to fall out is going to fall out.”
Even after investing a solid chunk of money and going under the knife four times, McHale says he’s accepted the reality of his hair situation. Still, he’s hopeful science will catch up soon. “They are still trying to unlock the DNA,” he added. “They thought that would be solved 15 years ago.”
As for the recovery process, it’s not as intense as some might expect. “They send you home with Tylenol,” McHale said. “If you shave your head, it goes faster.”
The actor’s candid approach to discussing his hair transplants has struck a chord with fans who appreciate honesty about aging and appearance in Hollywood. Joel McHale bald or not, he continues to work steadily and he’s not slowing down anytime soon.
In other news, McHale confirmed the long-awaited Community movie is officially happening. After years of rumors and fan pressure, he revealed that the funding is finally locked in. “We are going to make the movie and we have the money,” he told Us Weekly in April. “It’s come down to scheduling. And so, I think it’ll shoot at some point this year. Probably in the autumn. That’s my prediction and that’s also my hope.”
The Community movie will reunite McHale with co-stars like Donald Glover, Alison Brie, and Yvette Nicole Brown. Despite past delays, McHale admitted it was his own packed calendar that held things up. “If it’s anybody’s fault, it’s my schedule on this one,” he said. “It’s not [Donald’s] at all. He was available. … We love Donald. You can fully blame my schedule.”
Whether he’s tackling baldness head-on or finally delivering on #SixSeasonsAndAMovie, Joel McHale isn’t hiding anything and fans love him for it.
