John Legend is singing Kelsea Ballerini’s praises loud and clear, and not just on stage.
The EGOT winner didn’t hold back when talking about his new The Voice co-star, calling her “very good” and “wonderful” as she makes her debut season as a coach on the show. Kelsea Ballerini, just 31, jumped into the spinning chair lineup in February, and according to John, it’s like she was born for it.
“She took to the show quickly,” John Legend said in an interview with Extra. “She’s been a guest on the show before, she guest coached for Kelly Clarkson, so I think she came in just knowing how everything worked, and she was ready to go.” That familiarity clearly paid off because Kelsea’s already showing major confidence on the big red chair. John Legend praises Kelsea Ballerini for her smooth transition and how she’s been snagging contestants left and right, especially the female ones. “She has such a great personality,” he added. “She’s been very good at winning artists for her team, especially the ladies. I definitely knew I had no chance against her with some of the ladies. You could tell the girl power thing was working.”
There’s definitely some healthy competition brewing behind the scenes, but the respect is real. John described her as “wonderful” and said it’s been “great getting to know her on the show.” It seems like Kelsea’s already cementing her place in The Voice family, even among longtime veterans like John.
But it’s not just Kelsea who’s making waves this season. Adam Levine made his return to The Voice after a break that lasted nearly half a decade, and John Legend didn’t waste a second poking fun at it. “I was hoping he was a little rusty and wouldn’t know what to do, like I had to explain a few things. No chance,” John said with a laugh. “He was ready, and he’s probably been my stiffest competition when it came to four-chair turns and getting the artist that we both wanted.”
If you’re wondering how intense it gets behind those spinning chairs, John shared his personal highlight of the season so far, and yes, it involves a little friendly sabotage. “My favorite moment of the year so far was when I blocked Adam for Renzo,” he admitted. “It’s causing pain every time Renzo’s performing because Adam loves him so much. Every time he performs, I just look over like, “Yeah, I blocked you’.” That’s some next-level pettiness… and fans are absolutely here for it.
As for Adam Levine, he seems happy to be back in the Voice mix. He recently explained his return to E! News, saying, “I was ready to do it, then the stars aligned, and here I am.” Asked whether he regretted stepping away from the show in 2019, Adam responded candidly, “It’s funny, I actually didn’t miss it while I was gone. But I became more nostalgic about it once I came back.”
The Voice’s coaching panel this season is packed with big names, John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Adam Levine, and Michael Bublé, each bringing their own style, vibe, and strategy. But Kelsea’s ability to hold her own among such industry heavyweights, especially in her first full season, is something even John Legend had to give credit for. From snagging top vocalists to her chemistry with the other coaches, she’s already leaving her mark.
So, while fans might tune in for the talent, the dynamic between these superstar coaches is a major reason to stay glued to your screen. And judging by the way John Legend praises Kelsea Ballerini, it’s safe to say she’s here to stay, and shake things up.
