John Mulaney is getting sporty as he’s in talks to join the upcoming Madden biopic alongside Kathryn Hahn and Sienna Miller.
The film already boasts a star-stacked lineup with Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale, and now it looks like director David O. Russell is leveling up again.
This biopic is not just a football flick – it’s a full-blown time machine to the wild ’70s NFL era. Nicolas Cage is set to portray the iconic John Madden, the football coach-turned-commentator whose name became synonymous with the wildly successful Madden NFL video game franchise. Meanwhile, Christian Bale will suit up as legendary Raiders owner Al Davis.
And now? John Mulaney will play EA Sports founder Trip Hawkins – a key figure in making the Madden games a household name. Kathryn Hahn will step into the role of Madden’s wife Virginia, and Sienna Miller will portray Carole Davis, the wife of Al Davis. So yes, this isn’t just a locker-room drama – we’re getting family dynamics, behind-the-scenes power plays, and a lot of ’70s swagger.
The film, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, is gearing up to shoot in Atlanta and is based on a script penned by Russell himself. Known for American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook, Russell aims to bring his signature stylized chaos and heart to a story that’s part sports history, part video game origin tale, and all-around Americana.
In an earlier statement, Russell said Cage will capture “the best of the American spirit of originality, fun, and determination,” while highlighting the “joy, humanity, and genius” of John Madden’s journey.
John Madden, who passed away in 2021 at 85, didn’t just change football – he became a pop culture icon. From coaching the Raiders to Super Bowl glory in 1977 to becoming a color commentator staple and lending his name to one of the best-selling game franchises ever, the man left a lasting legacy.
As for Cage? This could be one of his last hurrahs. He recently revealed he’s eyeing retirement after a few more films, saying, “I feel like I’ve said what I’ve had to say with cinema.” So yeah, this could be one of those mic-drop moments for the Hollywood wild card.
