Julia Stiles is finally shedding light on the behind-the-scenes pressure she faced during her Hollywood prime, and it’s a side of fame many don’t talk about.
The actress, now 44, revealed she struggled with disordered eating at the height of her career, a direct result of having to squeeze into fashion designers’ red carpet sample sizes. Though she clarifies it wasn’t a full-blown eating disorder, Julia explains her relationship with food was anything but healthy, it was “restrictive, regimented, and stressful.”
On the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, Julia got candid: “I’m not talking about an eating disorder, it was just restrictive, regimented, and stressful. I always worried that it was going to be out of my control. Like, what if I gain weight? I couldn’t help but have a disordered relationship with it all.” She added that there was constant anxiety surrounding her body image, all rooted in the industry’s unrealistic expectations. “There was stress around what your body looks like and trying to mold your body into a certain size. As an actress, we go and promote on a red carpet, and we have to wear sample sizes from fashion designers. So it’s always, ‘Are we going to fit into the sample size’?”
This toxic cycle played out for years as she navigated red carpets and public appearances, trying to maintain an image that fit Hollywood’s narrow beauty standards. But everything changed when she became a mother. Julia and her husband, Preston Cook, share three children, Strummer, Arlo, and Henry, and that shift in responsibility and perspective helped her see how misguided her old priorities were. “I’ve moved on. I’ve learned to be kinder in the way I think about my body and look at my body, to be kinder to myself but also trust my body,” she shared. Being a mom left her too busy and too tired to stress over fitting into dresses. “I would be running on fumes, like, no sleep having just had a five-month-old baby. I didn’t have time to think about, Am I going to get back in shape to fit into those sample sizes?”
In the same podcast interview, Julia also opened up about an important influence early in her career: her Mona Lisa Smile co-star Julia Roberts. Roberts, already a Hollywood veteran, helped guide the younger women on set toward a healthier view of self-image. “She was an amazing example for us, and she was so maternal with all the young women on that set,” Stiles recalled. Julia Roberts shared a powerful insight that stuck with her: “You’re going to look back on these photos of you in your 20s and be like, I was beautiful, why didn’t I see that?” And now, Stiles realizes how true that was.
Today, Julia Stiles is no longer chasing some industry-defined idea of perfection. She’s focused on raising her children, trusting her body, and letting go of the stress and pressure that once consumed her. By sharing her experience with disordered eating and red carpet anxiety, she’s not just reflecting, she’s helping others break the silence and shame around similar struggles. Her message is clear: obsessing over your appearance is a waste of time, and embracing yourself as you are is the only thing that truly matters.
