Kate Moss didn’t get real closure from her breakup with Johnny Depp until a full 23 years after they split.
The supermodel and the Pirates of the Caribbean actor were one of the most iconic couples of the ’90s, dating from 1994 to 1998. Their whirlwind romance made headlines everywhere, but behind all the glam, things fell apart because Depp put his career ahead of their relationship. They hadn’t seen each other since their breakup, until a surprise run-in at Stella McCartney’s 50th birthday bash in 2021 changed that.
The party went down at Cliveden House Hotel in Berkshire, England, in September 2021, and it was star-studded, to say the least. Comedian David Walliams was also at the bash and later revealed that Moss and Depp ended up talking for a long time. In a chat with the Daily Mail’s Eden Confidential column, Walliams said, “They were talking for ages and ages and ages.” When he asked Kate what they were chatting about, she told him, “Well, I haven’t seen him since we broke up. I finally got closure.” Walliams, stunned, just said, “My goodness me.”
That one sentence said a lot. Because even though it had been decades, Moss clearly still needed that one last honest conversation. Back when they broke up in the late ’90s, Depp admitted it was mostly on him. Speaking to HELLO! magazine at the time, Depp confessed, “I have never gotten that emotional over a woman before. I have been so stupid because we had so much going for our relationship. I’m the one who has to take responsibility for what happened.” He said he was difficult to be around, let his work get in the way, and didn’t give Moss the attention she deserved. “The whole thing was crazy because I should never have gotten so worked up over what people had to say about my work,” he added. “Sure, I should care about my movies, but when I get home I should try to leave that stuff behind. I couldn’t do that, and I was horrific to live with. Trust me, I’m a total moron at times.”
But their story didn’t just end with that reunion in 2021. The following year, Kate Moss stood by Depp again, this time during his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022. Heard had written a Washington Post op-ed in 2018 that implied Depp physically and sexually abused her. Depp sued for defamation, and the trial became one of the biggest celebrity court cases of the decade.
During the trial, Heard brought up a rumor about Depp allegedly pushing Moss down a flight of stairs during their relationship. She referenced the story while on the stand, but Moss wasn’t letting that slide. She testified via video link from Gloucestershire, England, to the Fairfax County District Court in Virginia, completely denying the rumor.
She explained that they were staying at the GoldenEye resort in Jamaica when it had rained. As she was leaving their room, she slipped down a set of stairs, hurt her back, and screamed. She said Depp ran back to help her, carried her to their room, and got her medical attention. When Depp’s lawyer, Benjamin Chew, asked her directly if Johnny had ever pushed her down any stairs, Moss replied, “No, he never pushed me, kicked me, or threw me down any stairs.”
Her testimony clearly carried weight. In the end, the jury ruled in favor of Depp, deciding that Heard’s statements in the op-ed were false, defamatory, and made with actual malice.
So yeah, 23 years, one glamorous party, and a high-profile courtroom later, Kate Moss finally got her moment of closure. And for once, a celebrity reunion actually gave a happy ending instead of another tabloid mess.
