Keanu Reeves isn’t exactly thrilled about where Constantine 2 is heading.
That’s according to Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in the 2005 original. Stormare recently shared that Reeves isn’t happy with the scripts he’s seen so far for the long-awaited sequel, and the reason is pretty clear, he thinks the story is veering too far from what made the first movie special.
Speaking with The Direct, Stormare explained that Reeves wants to keep the tone of Constantine 2 spiritual and grounded in the supernatural, rather than turning it into a big, flashy action flick. “Keanu, which I know pretty good, is not so happy with the scripts and usually what comes out of the studios,” said Stormare.
The problem, it seems, is that studios want to ramp up the action, leaning into high-energy scenes with stunts and explosions. “They want to have, you know, cars flying in the air. They want to have people doing flip-flops and fighting action scenes,” Stormare added.
That doesn’t sit well with Reeves. As Stormare puts it, the actor has already done the action-heavy thing with John Wick. What he wants from Constantine 2 is something deeper. “This movie is spiritual. It’s about demons and regular people. And I wanted to keep it that way,” Reeves reportedly told Stormare.
Stormare, now 71, also has his own ideas for returning to the role of Lucifer. He joked about bringing back the character in a sleek black suit to mirror his unique appearance from the first film. But he also emphasized that both he and Reeves would prefer the sequel to build naturally on the original film’s foundation. “Just do the first movie again and add some other elements, and you have a sequel,” he said.
Despite all this, Stormare admits he hasn’t personally read any of the scripts. “That is just hearsay from him,” he clarified. But he’s definitely on board with Reeves’ vision, to keep the tone consistent and avoid making a sequel that feels disconnected.
Using The Godfather Part II as an example, Stormare argued that a successful sequel should feel like a natural extension of the first film. “Don’t do a completely different movie, then it won’t hold together,” he warned.
Reeves remains passionate about the character. Stormare said he was “very proud” of the original Constantine and fought hard to shape the character into something meaningful. With memorable performances by Tilda Swinton as Gabriel and Stormare himself as a minimalist Lucifer, the first film eventually gained cult status, even though it didn’t start off as a box office hit.
Whether or not Constantine 2 will align with Reeves’ vision remains to be seen, but it’s clear he’s pushing for a sequel that honors the original’s unique tone rather than chasing action-heavy trends.
