For the first time, we’re getting a more remorseful side of King Charles, who deeply regrets his treatment of Princess Diana during their marriage in the 1980s.
On the outside, the pair seemed to be the perfect embodiment of a fairytale romance. Yet behind closed doors, things were anything but.
From the very beginning, Diana Spencer and the former Prince had a strained relationship. This was mainly because, according to Diana, “there were three people” in her marriage to Prince Charles, so it all got a bit “too crowded” for comfort. She is, of course, referring to Prince Charles’ secret love affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, whom he was engaging in a clandestine romance with throughout his marriage to Diana.
The worst part? The former Prince of Wales wasn’t exactly subtle about his secret romance with Camilla, (who is now his longtime wife.) He’d even gifted Camilla a bracelet with their pet names for each other (Fred and Gladys) engraved into the jewelry. When Princess Diana discovered the personalized bracelet, just moments before their famous royal wedding, she knew their marriage was doomed. Still, royal duties called, and she felt like she had no choice but to marry Prince Charles. But it wasn’t long before she felt trapped- like a songbird in a gilded cage.
Princess Diana Recalled Her Husband Prince Charles Offering ‘No Support’ In Their Marriage
Princess Diana explained in her tell-all book that her husband was completely dismissive of her pain and suffering throughout their marriage, to the point where he refused to listen to her numerous cries for help. At her lowest point, Diana recalled hurling herself down a flight of stairs just to get Prince Charles’ attention. The worst part? She was pregnant with Prince William at the time.
But the prince responded cruelly, by claiming she was “crying wolf”. He then ran off to play Polo with his friends, instead of emotionally supporting his wife. “Prince Charles wasn’t at all supportive,” the late Diana said in her biography. “I cried like a baby to the four walls. I cried because I got no support from Charles and no support from the Palace press office. They just said: ‘You’re on your own’, so I thought: ‘Fine.’”
Furthermore, she recalled King Charles being completely dismissive when it came to giving birth to Prince William. “When we had William, we had to find a date in the diary that suited him and his polo…We had found a date where Charles could get off his polo pony for me to give birth. That was very nice, felt very grateful about that!” she recalled, sarcastically.
King Charles Now Feels Horrible For His Treatment of Princess Diana
Now, King Charles is re-examining his marriage to Princess Diana in a more remorseful light. According to inside sources close to the royal figure, King Charles still “deeply ‘regrets’ the pain and sadness caused” during his union with the late princess.
