Len Wiseman, director of the Ballerina film, says he’d love to expand the story into a full-blown franchise.
The 52-year-old filmmaker, known for his work on the Underworld series, recently stepped into the John Wick universe to direct the spin-off centered on Ana de Armas’ character, Eve Macarro, a ballerina turned deadly assassin.
While the film hasn’t hit theaters yet, Wiseman is already thinking ahead. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he admitted that once you dive deep into building a character’s world, it’s hard not to think about what comes next.
“I wanted this film to be the best that it could possibly be,” he said. “But when you’re developing something and you get so immersed in a character, you have to build out what their story is before and after the movie you’re making.”
He hinted that Ballerina ends on a mysterious note, leaving room for speculation. “The movie ends a bit ambiguously on purpose. Who’s putting the contract out on her? I’d like to hear theories about where it goes. I definitely have my theory.”
He’s not the only one eager for more. Ana de Armas, who brings the lead character to life, is just as excited about continuing the journey. “I love the character and I think we can go anywhere from where we left it,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
Ana’s connection to the franchise goes beyond this movie. She’s a longtime admirer of the John Wick universe and has previously worked with Keanu Reeves on Knock Knock and Exposed.
“It’s really cool,” she said. “I really like this character and the story and the universe and everything that Chad [Stahelski] and Keanu created with the John Wick films. Now to be a part of it, it’s really special.”
Len Wiseman was sold on Ana de Armas early on but seeing her brief role in No Time to Die sealed the deal. “I went and saw a private screening of No Time to Die, and that confirmed her casting even more. I would love to see that character show up again, it was just too brief.”
Getting into assassin shape wasn’t easy. Ana said the training for Ballerina pushed her harder than anything before. “Every day tested my limits. Just endurance and the level of discipline and commitment and focus that you have to have to take on a movie like this is something that I had never done before, especially for a long period of time.”
With Wiseman’s vision, Ana’s dedication, and an open-ended finale, the Ballerina movie sequel is looking more like a question of when rather than if. If audiences respond well, we may be seeing a lot more of Eve Macarro’s deadly ballet.
