Lily Collins is diving headfirst into motherhood, and it’s safe to say she’s completely in love with this new chapter.
The Emily in Paris star took to Instagram on Sunday, May 11, to mark her very first Mother’s Day, reflecting on the emotional journey of becoming a mom and how much it’s already reshaped her world.
The 36-year-old actress and her husband, director Charlie McDowell, welcomed their baby girl earlier this year via surrogate. And while they’ve kept things relatively private, Lily couldn’t help but share a heartfelt message alongside a photo of her cradling their daughter. “My first Mother’s Day. No words can describe this new journey, this new life,” she wrote. “I love you with all of my heart, Tove, with all of the parts of it that have grown deeper since the day you were born and all of those I never even knew existed.”
Lily Collins’ motherhood journey hasn’t just been about diapers and sleepless nights, it’s brought on some major internal growth too. “You have expanded my world, broadened my horizons, and widened my smile more than I knew was possible. And to think, it’s only the beginning,” she continued. “I couldn’t be more grateful or honored to be your mom.”
Earlier this year, Lily and Charlie introduced their daughter to the world through another emotional Instagram post. “Welcome to the center of our world, Tove Jane McDowell,” she captioned the photo at the time. “Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you to the moon and back again.”
Fans have followed Lily’s personal and professional evolution over the years, but her journey to motherhood has an even deeper backstory. In a 2017 interview with Us Weekly, Lily spoke candidly about her past struggles with an eating disorder, revealing that her desire to someday have children played a huge role in her recovery. “Everyone has a different form of recovery. I never had an ‘aha’ moment,” she said at the time. “My reason to finally start talking about [my eating disorder] was the moment I realized I wanted a family.”
The actress made it clear that being honest about her health was non-negotiable before starting a family. She wanted to step into motherhood fully present and healthy, both physically and emotionally. “I wanted kids. I didn’t want this to be something I bring into that,” she explained.
Lily, who married Charlie McDowell in a dreamy Colorado ceremony back in September 2021, seems to be embracing this next chapter with her signature grace and heart-on-sleeve honesty. From acting power moves to powerful personal reflections, she’s never been one to shy away from sharing the meaningful stuff, and now, with baby Tove in her life, she’s got a whole new kind of story to tell.
And while she’s still glowing from her first Mother’s Day, it’s clear that this is just the beginning of Lily Collins’ motherhood journey. One that’s already left her forever changed.
