Mathew Knowles is opening up about how he protected his daughter Beyoncé when the spotlight hit her at a young age.
He says it wasn’t just about launching a superstar career, it was also about building a solid foundation to keep her grounded. From day one, Mathew Knowles established boundaries to protect Beyoncé as her fame exploded in her teens, and now he’s reflecting on just how important that structure was.
Back when Destiny’s Child dropped their first number one single, “No, No, No,” and Beyoncé was only 16, everything changed. Suddenly, millions of dollars, flashing lights, fans, pressure, and fame surrounded her. Most teens can’t even handle high school, let alone global superstardom. But Mathew says it was all about how you deal with it. Speaking to The Sunday Times, he explained, “It can be difficult when you’re young and all of a sudden you have millions of dollars and everybody loves you. We had all sorts of boundaries … Having a stable environment around you becomes important with fame.”
For over two decades, Mathew Knowles was not just Beyonce’s father, he was her manager, mentor, and the strategist behind her brand. He managed Destiny’s Child and played a major role in her solo career until 2011. And even though that professional chapter closed, he still stands by the work he did to guide her through the most intense parts of her rise.
But Mathew admits it wasn’t all perfect. He openly says there are things he’d do differently if he had the chance. “There are a lot of things that I would do differently,” he said. “I would have suggested different songs, made differences in some of the tours that we did … We’ll leave it at that.” Still, there’s no doubt he’s proud. Proud of what they built. Proud of who she became.
And he doesn’t shy away from hyping himself up either. “I’m very grateful to have been the best manager in the history of music,” he said boldly. He even added that he doesn’t hear that compliment enough. But when you look at the stats, he’s not just talking. Mathew pointed out that many of Beyoncé’s top 20 songs, at least 70 percent, came from her first four albums, the era he helped shape.
Even after stepping back, his influence remains. “To know that I was a part of that, that I … let her understand the importance of brand development, and that 30-40 percent of her team are people I hired 30 years ago … It makes me feel proud and grateful that I built the roadmap for Beyonce’s success,” he said.
While the father-daughter dynamic may have shifted from professional to personal, Mathew still sees himself as the architect of her career. He’s the one who kept things stable while the world spun fast. The one who taught her about branding before Instagram made it trendy. And maybe, just maybe, the reason Beyoncé handles fame like a pro is because of those early boundaries he set up to protect her.
So, while Beyoncé’s empire continues to grow, it’s clear that part of the blueprint was laid by Mathew Knowles, who says it loud and proud, he did the work, built the team, and gave his daughter the tools to rule the world on her terms.
