The James Bond franchise is reportedly getting a major reboot, with plans to cast a “very young” new actor and take the iconic spy series back to its origins.
According to actor Daniel Mays, who spoke about the future of 007 on the ‘We’re Not Getting Any Younger’ podcast, the next Bond film will dial back the clock – possibly to the 1960s – and reintroduce the character in a new light.
“Bond is a big deal right, that’s going to Amazon,” Mays said. “I heard a rumour they’re going to cast someone very young and go sort of back to the origins. They’re going to sort of ’60s, you’re going to have all the retro cars and that sort of stuff – and start again. I think that would be kind of cool.”
This reported creative shift comes in the wake of Daniel Craig’s dramatic exit from the role after 2021’s ‘No Time To Die’, in which Bond met his end. The franchise, long steered by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, is now under the creative direction of Amazon MGM Studios following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM.
To lead the next era, Amazon has tapped two heavyweight producers: David Heyman, known for his work on the ‘Harry Potter’ series, and Amy Pascal, a veteran of the ‘Spider-Man’ films and past Bond titles including ‘Casino Royale’, ‘Quantum of Solace’, and ‘Skyfall’.
In a joint statement, Heyman and Pascal expressed their reverence for the legacy of Bond: “James Bond is one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema. We are humbled to follow in the footsteps of Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson… and excited to keep the spirit of Bond very much alive as he embarks on his next adventure.”
This marks a historic change for the franchise. For decades, the Bond films have remained under the close watch of the Broccoli family. This is the first time outside producers will guide the development of a Bond film, and early signals suggest a fresh vision is in store.
Amazon MGM Studios’ head of film, Courtenay Valenti, echoed the weight of the responsibility: “We are approaching every creative decision with James Bond, which Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have so masterfully steered, with the greatest sense of responsibility.”
While casting for the next 007 remains unannounced, speculation is already heating up, especially given the franchise’s rumored desire to cast an actor who could portray a younger, more formative Bond. If the reports are accurate, fans can expect vintage aesthetics, a 1960s setting, and a return to Bond’s origins, potentially creating the franchise’s most radical transformation yet.
The upcoming installment will be produced under Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
One thing is certain: Bond is back, but he won’t look quite like the man we remember.
