Nicole Scherzinger is riding high, and honestly, who can blame her? The former Pussycat Dolls star just landed her first-ever Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, and she’s absolutely floored by the recognition.
Her debut as Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd. didn’t just make waves, it put her in a league with Broadway’s finest.
When asked how she reacted to the big news, Nicole told The Hollywood Reporter that her “heart was full.” She added, “I was just grateful to be recognized in this way; in this particular season, I feel like I am with the greats.” And she’s not wrong. Nicole’s up against legit theater royalty like Audra McDonald (Gypsy), Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard (both in Death Becomes Her), and Jasmine Amy Rogers (Boop! The Musical). “I know that I’m in a category with true masters,” she said. “There are so many brilliantly talented people this season. So, to be alongside these names, I’m very grateful.”
And while the recognition is huge, Nicole’s also feeling deeply proud to represent her background. “Being a woman of Hawaiian, Ukrainian, and Filipino descent, I’m very proud because I can represent my family, my people, and my heritage,” she said. “I’m so proud to be a representation of that for people of brown skin.” In a year where conversations around diversity in theater are more important than ever, her presence in this category is powerful.
It’s not just about awards for Nicole, it’s something much deeper. When asked what winning a Tony would mean to her, she got emotional. “Just the thought of it brings tears to my eyes,” she admitted. “We really seek that validation from others. We struggle with our own issues and self-worth… it would just mean that I’m finally living in my highest purpose.”
Playing Norma Desmond, an iconic character with layers of emotional complexity, has clearly impacted Nicole on a soul-deep level. She sees herself in Norma’s need for recognition but also understands that true fulfillment comes from living your purpose. “To be able to do something that is your purpose and your gift, and to be able to share it with the world… and that it makes a difference or makes an impact, it is the greatest dream, better than any recognition,” she explained. “It’s the ultimate award.”
Whether she takes home the trophy or not, Nicole Scherzinger has already won big. Not just because the Tony nomination proves she belongs on Broadway with the best, but because she’s finally getting to live a dream that feels true to who she is. And judging by the emotional honesty she’s showing, she’s making an impact far beyond the stage.
