Security Showdown: Prince Harry Drags UK Into Legal War

Prince Harry has fired another legal shot in his long-running battle with the UK government – and this time, he’s claiming he was “singled out” for “inferior treatment” when it comes to his personal security.

On April 8, the Duke of Sussex appeared in person at the Court of Appeal in London, continuing his challenge against the decision that downgraded his security status after he stepped back as a working royal in 2020. Unlike other royals, Harry’s security is now assessed on a case-by-case basis. But according to his legal team, that’s not just unfair – it’s potentially dangerous.

“He’s not asking for royal treatment. He’s asking to be treated like any other high-risk public figure,” said his lawyer Shaheed Fatima KC in court. “This so-called ‘bespoke’ system isn’t better – it’s unequal.”

Fatima told judges that Harry isn’t seeking the exact same security he had as a full-time royal, but he does want the same transparent review process used for others under threat. She argued that the government committee responsible for royal security – Ravec – failed to follow its own rules and didn’t consult the proper advisory boards.

The appeal follows an earlier High Court ruling that upheld the government’s decision. But Harry’s team claims that ruling was flawed, saying it relied on a “fundamental error” in interpreting the guidelines.

This new hearing is expected to last two days. Harry, now based in California with Meghan and their two children, is not expected to speak, but his presence alone underscores the case’s personal weight.

At the core of Harry’s argument is a belief that his status – as both a former senior royal and a public figure with ongoing security threats – wasn’t properly considered. In other words, he’s not demanding special treatment; he’s asking not to be punished for stepping back.

Whether the Court of Appeal will agree remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Prince Harry’s legal war with the UK establishment is far from over.
