Selena Gomez isn’t shy about where she’s from. As a matter of fact, she says her Mexican heritage has influenced her whole life, and it shows in everything from her music to how she moves through Hollywood. In an interview recently, the 32-year-old star got candid about how much Latin representation means to her as she reflected on her journey and the strong connection she has with other Latina women in the industry. The key focus keyphrase here is on Selena Gomez’s Mexican heritage, and well, it’s not just her background; it’s her identity.

As Selena told Billboard, “My Mexican heritage is something that has influenced me my whole life, and it’s not lost on me how representation matters.” She also credits much of her support and growth in entertainment to fellow Latin women, who she says have been some of the most uplifting voices throughout her career. That kind of unity is rare, and it’s something Selena values deeply.
You could see this pride in her 2021 Spanish-language EP Revelación. It debuted at number one on the Top Latin Albums chart, making her the first female artist to hit that mark since Shakira’s El Dorado. While Selena doesn’t usually chase stats, even she couldn’t hide her pride about that moment. “I never really focus on stats and charts,” she said, “but when I hear something like that, all I can feel is pride. Shakira is an icon and someone I’ve always looked up to.”
For Selena, Revelación wasn’t just a passion project-it was a way to really honor her roots. She’d dropped Spanish versions of singles in the past, but an all-Spanish EP had been on her bucket list for years. And she didn’t just stop at the sound. “I worked hard on making sure I paid homage to my Latin roots, through the music as well as the aesthetics of all the visuals,” she said.

Her connection to Latin culture also extended into film with her 2024 Spanish-language project Emilia Perez. That experience, she says, pushed her outside her comfort zone in all the best ways. “I pushed myself into uncomfortable spaces, which, as an actress, are the most rewarding,” she shared, adding that working with director Jacques Audiard was one of the highlights of her career. Now, Selena’s taking her time picking her next role because she wants it to surprise people, challenge her, and feel just as meaningful.
