‘Simpsons’ Movie 2 Slated For Summer 2027 Theatrical Release

Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are officially back on the big screen.

Disney’s 20th Century has confirmed that a sequel to The Simpsons Movie is under production, with an scheduled theatrical release on July 23, 2027. The venture would be the family’s first big-screen outing in two decades, following the huge success of their 2007 film.

The news broke with a poster posted on Instagram with the franchise’s signature pink donut and the saucy slogan: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” No plot has been revealed yet, but the news has sent longtime fans buzzing with anticipation to see Springfield’s most beloved family back on the big screen.

The release date adjustment also includes shifting Disney’s broader slate. The Simpsons sequel has taken over an untitled Marvel movie that was pulled off the studio’s slate. This change creates a hole in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with nothing new between Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.

Developed by Matt Groening, The Simpsons is the longest-running television show and animated series ever. Having started its run in 1989, it has already been renewed up to season 40, which will be aired in 2028 and 2029. Located in the fictional Springfied, the show traces the story of Homer, the bumbling father, Marge, his patient mother, and the three kids: naughty Bart, smart Lisa, and baby Maggie.

The original Simpsons Movie was filmed by David Silverman and was released in July 2007. It was an international success, earning $536 million on a budget of $75 million. The plot had Springfield buried under a giant dome after Homer’s carelessness contaminated the town’s lake, a premise that served up humor and social commentary in typical Simpsons fashion. No sequel eventuated despite years of rumors and speculations, until now.

Showrunner Matt Selman recently looked back on the show’s ongoing success during the streaming era. He thanked Disney+ for keeping the show fresh and introducing it to new generations. “Now rather than having the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they just get to watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever,” Selman said to Variety. “Having it be on Disney+ has been kind of revivifying for us.”. Not that we knew we were in need of rejuvenation, but we thank you.

Now that the sequel is officially on Disney’s slate, the anticipation has already started. The fans will get to see for the first time what kind of new mayhem, laughter, and cultural commentary Springfield’s most iconic family will provide when The Simpsons Movie 2 is released in theaters during summer 2027.
