Stormzy Officially Goes Hollywood with “Big Man” Release

Stormzy just added another title to his growing empire – actor. The 31-year-old British rapper, real name Michael Omari, has officially launched his acting career with Big Man, a 24-minute short film that also marks the first release from his brand-new production company, #Merky Films.

Speaking about the project, Stormzy called it a celebration of “the joy, spirit and fearless energy of youth.” He added, “That feeling like life is one big adventure and the world’s your playground. I hope it inspires you to dream bigger, live louder, and hold on to that unapologetic energy that comes with being young.”

Directed by Oscar-winner Aneil Karia, Big Man tells the fictional story of Tenzman, a once-famous rapper navigating an uncertain future. It’s dropping on YouTube at 8pm on Wednesday, June 18, in collaboration with Apple.

The film is more than just a creative project – it’s a statement of intent from Stormzy’s new venture. #Merky Films aims to open up space in the UK film and television world for Afro-Caribbean and other underrepresented communities. The company’s goal is to spotlight new voices, bring cultures together, and tell stories that create real impact.

Stormzy’s media empire keeps expanding. After launching #Merky Books, #Merky FC, and the #Merky Foundation, the move into film feels like a natural next step. “Music is my first love, but film is my second,” he said. “#Merky Films is something I’ve been dreaming about for ages – a space for powerful British stories and a solid home for fresh, unexpected art.”

He’s already lined up a development deal with Netflix, with plans for a major drama series and a landmark biopic. Talks are also ongoing with other film studios. Beyond short films, the company’s slate will include documentaries, animations and even mockumentaries – all with the goal of bringing overlooked stories to life.

For Stormzy, it’s about legacy. “We always like to give that opportunity before the world latches on and catches up,” he said. “I definitely, in 30 or 40 years’ time, want to see whoever wins the best director at the Oscars to say that the first thing they directed was for #Merky Films.”

Big Man is just the beginning, but it sets the tone for what #Merky Films is all about – bold storytelling, real representation, and giving people their shot before the spotlight finds them.

With Stormzy’s influence, vision, and track record of elevating others, this move into film might be just as game-changing as his rise in music.
